It's increasingly important to understand, & use, critical lenses in quant work conducted in education research. but Hasn't been an intellectual home for scholars advancing/applying critical quantitative methods. Now, in #AERA, there can be! 🚨 petition: surveymonkey.com/r/WCQCQZW

Love when people say "the data speaks for itself" as if we didn't spend centuries specifically developing statistical methods because data absolutely does not speak for itself.

@ChrisMarsicano Are people from other schools welcome? I got a 2.0 in Calc 3 (epically mismatched instructional style) and a 2.5 in physics E/M (guess iv shouldn't do that major) Now I have a PhD and am successful and so forth

Hey Davidson folks! What was your worst grade at Davidson? I'm trying to make a case to students that you can do just fine in life without *all* As. I got C in Forensic Anthropology. Fascinating class, learned a ton. Dr. Cho is the GOAT. One of the best classes I ever had.

@mpolikoff I had to write the equivalent letter for admission to a doc program. I don't remember whether I actually said "I would already prefer to co-author with them, than half of people with degrees in-hand" or not, but writing the requested length felt like a bad use of time

Don't let departments underpay you because "inequality within/across rank." It's not your fault that Prof Bob has been in the dept since Jesus walked the Earth and hasn't published in 20 years. Your pay shouldn't be contingent upon Prof Bob's weak ass CV.

@JeffDenning Aren't "average rent per bedroom for an apartment in a college town, 2024 vs 1993" going to be a pretty good answer to that difficulty in explanation?

...Over the same period, student borrowing tripled. While certain groups, such as graduate students and affluent undergraduates, have faced higher prices, aggregate increases in borrowing are hard to explain by average changes in net tuition prices."

Super interesting paper by Adam Looney on change in cost of college "While real top-line “sticker prices” have increased by 114 percent since 1993, after accounting for increases in financial aid and tax benefits, net tuition prices have not changed... #_i14" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10.1086/73…

Hey folks, I'm looking for someone with expertise in adaptive intervention design (e.g., SMART) to be a consultant or Co-I on an R01 application. Does anyone know someone who may be interested?

@mpolikoff "LICK-urt" is to survey design as "data are" is to quants and "degree of validity evidence for intended score uses and interpretations" is to educational measurement experts.

@jacasiegel Why is this so rare even when the end point is "I would like to use and cite your scale"? It is confusing

I am once again asking you to include the item text in your scale validation paper. There should be standards established and popularized for reporting on this.

Peer review in higher ed journals is so abysmally slow at this point that R&R or rejection notifications is how I find out what I had under review. Because I cannot (bother to) remember for that long.

I believe it should be a federal crime to publish a scale validation paper without including the items, instructions, response options, and scoring within the manuscript. All reviewers and editors who let scale validation papers be published without these are complicit.
