Patellar tendon tears can happen due to a sudden, forceful eccentric contraction of the quadriceps muscle with the foot planted & the knee flexed (as in this case of Oladipo). Typical causes occur when landing from a high jump or making a sudden change in direction at high speed.

On April 22nd, 2023, Victor Oladipo suffered a significant left knee injury in Game 3 of the NBA Playoffs. MRI revealed that Victor Oladipo suffered a torn patellar tendon in his left knee and he will miss the remainder of the postseason. #NBAPlayoffs #VictorOladipo

Barnes said the knee tendinitis flared up while he was out with COVID. It's not something he had experienced before. "It just made my knee hurt a little bit. Coming back, I couldn't really run as well, jump as well, do certain things... It's getting better right now."
