All 8 authors eventually left Google after publishing the transformer paper.
Google then clamped down on research publications and IP to stop handing competitors their next breakthrough.
It was published out of excitement - they definitely didn't open-source it out of generosity, and probably didn't fully comprehend what they had.
It cost them a massive AI lead, and their open culture changed as a result. Some context here.

Google could have kept this algorithm private instead of open sourcing it. But they allowed everyone, including competitors, to benefit from their research. That is why I respect Google. If you did not know, this entire AI era became possible because Google openly published their transformer model research paper.
