@jenny_seahawks If he produces 2 war a year, he wouldn’t touch close to this avg amount annually from arb and you could resign him to basically this contract but in 5 years. Not saying it’d be a disaster but it’s definitely not a mariners win in this case.

This is assuming he was a free agent. It works a little differently when you already had multiple years of control.

The hard cap of the NFL has done exactly what it’s supposed to do: create a level playing field regardless of market size. If it weren’t for that, Patrick Mahomes (or your favorite small market QB) would be the QB for the Cowboys rather than than stay where they were drafted. Dynasties in small markets exist because they drafted the right QB, the most influential position in pro sports. Competitive balance isn’t “Anyone can get hot once, small markets can make the playoffs, there is randomness in October. “ It’s how many teams realistically contend over time, how quickly bad teams can become good, and if money can buy correction. Those are the problems baseball fans want solved, even if it just creates the illusion of parity.
