The 2nd Robot Marathon has officially begun in Beijing. This year feels different. 1. Around 40% of teams are running fully autonomous, no remote control. 2. Top robots are already hitting ~10s per 100 meter, getting surprisingly close to human sprint limits. 3. You can also see much better safety design upfront. Way more structured than last year’s chaos. 4. Still, failures happen. Marathon distance pushes motors, structure, and control to the limit. What works in short demos breaks down over longer runs. Overall, a big step forward, but also a reminder that real-world robotics is still far from the polished demo videos you get fed from companies.

@minordissent @xwanyex This perfectly describes my own political development. It’s a miracle we emerged out of the muck and mud at all. Millions of our ancestors died for it

My politics can at least be partly explained by the fact that my baseline is to be surprised that everything is working as well as it is. It’s all amazing, really. A leftist thinks, “there are so many homeless people, homelessness is out of control.“ But I look at the world and what I see is that almost nobody is homeless. There are 350 million people or whatever in this country and, like, almost none of them are homeless. And have you met people? Do you see what people are like? So many of them are irrational, unpredictable, impatient, lazy. And yet most of them have jobs and houses and stuff. And it all works. It all just keeps working. You can have an industrial revolution and everything just kind of keeps working. You can invent the automobile and everything just kind of keeps working. You can invent the computer and everybody just goes on having a job and living in a house. It’s amazing. I don’t know how all these people are doing it, but you just look out at the world and see that they’re doing it. 🤷🏻‍♂️

A Boston public school teacher is paying a higher tax rate than Jeff Bezos is today. That's flat-out wrong. My Wealth Tax for ultra-millionaires and billionaires will finally right the wrongs of our tax code so that the rich pay their fair share.

Robinhood refused a buy order, didn't notify me, withdrew my money anyways, and cost me over $10k in lost gains in the last 24 hours. What the hell should I be using instead?

@zarathustra5150 Every time I see we have depleted our missile stock, I think that if this was against China then that puny missile stock wouldn’t have mattered anyways. It is a good thing that we are depleting it now so we are forced to rebuild the manufacturing capacity needed to maintain it

US lost more aircraft in 1 day than it had on any single day since 1972 during the Vietnam War. Professor Mearsheimer noted the deep irony in what Hegseth tried to spin as some kind of great success story actually produced the worst single-day air losses in over half a century.

There isn't a single smart person I know that uses claude code over chatGPT 5.4 xhigh by the way. The only reason anyone would use claude is, amusingly, because claude does not have guard rails. But now they do, so there is no reason remaining to use it

Are we living through traumatic event after traumatic event, or are we just the first generation with worldwide communication and social media, and life has actually always been this horrific?

One of the great luxuries one pays dearly for in America is to privilege of not living around miserable people. There are many places in the USA that *should* technically be a paradise, but aren't, because the residents of that place are wretched bastards. Likewise, there are many places in the USA that are objectively middling, crappy, bummer-type places that actually rock because they're full of cheerful, friendly, optimistic people. People gladly pay the premium and move to wherever the "happy people" are moving, even if the land itself kind of sucks.

My wave crest foam has never looked right. Here's how I fixed it🛠️ In real life, waves break, mixing in air with the water to create that foamy appearance. That foam doesn't disappear right away, it takes time for the bubbles to dissipate. The solution is to add in a persistence buffer, which accumulates foam over time. The foam amplitude in the buffer decays over time in order to model the foam dissipation. The effect is much more convincing. Foam gathers on the wave front, accumulates at the top, then slowly disappears as it rolls down the back of the wave. Still needs some tuning, but this combined with the wave spray should create some really nice looking rough seas! 🌊

A lot of Indians working in the West are the first in their bloodline to have made it out of generational poverty. They grew up in remote distant villages far away from the influences of globalization. Now that they are somewhat affluent they bring over their parents to show them around Europe. This is often a matter of immense pride for the family: a sign that they have arrived on the world stage and can afford to do things their forefathers couldn’t have imagined in their wildest dreams. These parents often come from rural areas as poor as sub Saharan Africa. They do not at all understand Western sensibilities, have a completely different sense of what is polite and what is not and are usually extremely terrified and overwhelmed by a world that feels alien. I understand that you find them inconvenient and perhaps even grating. I get it. Their aesthetics stand out. They lack polish and seem out of place in glitzy European airports. Although the glitzy part is increasingly becoming contentious. I sense the condescension in your tweet but remember at the end of the day these people are spending money in Europe, on hotels, food, and souvenirs. They are giving more than they take and it is important to see them as equals and not lesser beings.
WHG baddie@isa2001m

I 100% believe this because the past year or so in I would see Indians arriving at the central train station in Amsterdam or around the airport train station behaving like it was their first day on earth. One example, I saw an Indian woman who was scared to use the escalator, looking at it like she saw water burn, while holding up many people behind her who were trying to exit the train platform.

Many immigrants come to America because their nations of origin suck. But when they come to America they do not want to adapt to the norms that make America not suck, prefering to keep those norms that made their home countries suck. These people should stay in Suckistan.
Shadi Hamid@shadihamid

Should a minority community's right to be in America depend on their willingness to converge with the cultural mainstream? No, it shouldn't depend on that. It shouldn't depend on anything. We're all Americans, after all.
