🇪🇸 The Appeals Chamber of the National Court has confirmed the acquittal of Yassine Kanjaa, the Moroccan man who killed a sacristan in front of a church in Algeciras in 2023 while shouting "Allahu Akbar!" While the court acknowledged the objective facts of the murder and injuries, it applied a full exemption from criminal responsibility due to his mental state at the time of the attacks. The court found Kanjaa suffered from schizophrenia with an acute psychotic breakdown. This condition completely "annulled his intellectual and volitional faculties," the court said. The court rejected the terrorism classification for the crimes, ruling that his actions were a result of "messianic and delusional ideas" rather than a coordinated terrorist intent to destabilize public peace.
