@AdamInHTownTX@ReasonUnchains@ShamsCharania@mikegolicjr Probably not since it’s not even huge in the U.S.
Does it bother you that my account was created in Sweden while I live 3 months in the US, 3 months in Spain, 3 months in Sweden and 3 months in Thailand?
Details of a landmark WNBA collective bargaining agreement, per ESPN sources:

- Average revenue share of nearly 20% across deal
- Supermax starting at $1.4M
- Average salary in range of $600K, minimum above $300K
It’s not making money now but it might in the future, it’s an investment!
It’s about owning and developing an asset expected to appreciate and benefit the broader NBA ecosystem over time.
The NBA subsidizes the WNBA primarily because it owns a significant stake in the league and views it as a long-term investment, rather than a purely charitable endeavor. The WNBA was founded by the NBA in 1996, and the two leagues remain closely integrated.
Ownership is split roughly as:
• ~42% by NBA owners/NBA itself
• ~42% by WNBA team owners (some overlapping with NBA owners)
• ~16% by outside investors (from a 2022 capital raise)
This means NBA-affiliated stakeholders control a majority (often cited around 60% when overlaps are factored in). The NBA provides operational support, shared resources (like facilities, marketing, and bundled media deals), and direct financial backing to cover shortfalls.
Historically, the WNBA has operated at a loss—estimates ranged from ~$10 million annually in earlier years to higher figures (e.g., ~$40 million in some recent reports before major growth). NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has repeatedly stated the league invests year after year with no short-term expectation of profitability, emphasizing it’s an ongoing commitment. Reasons include:
• Promoting gender equality and providing role models in women’s sports
• Building the overall basketball ecosystem (e.g., growing fan bases, talent pipelines, and global interest in the sport)
• Shared business synergies (e.g., joint media rights deals, like the recent 11-year package where WNBA gets ~$200 million/year)
The NBA doesn’t see it as “losing money” in isolation but as investing in a property it partially owns. Team owners (many with NBA ties) also anticipate future gains through rising franchise valuations, expansion fees (nearly $1 billion collected recently), and eventual profitability as revenue grows (e.g., projections toward $1 billion in some years, driven by stars like Caitlin Clark, higher viewership, and new media deals).
As of early 2026, the financial picture has shifted positively. The WNBA triggered revenue sharing with players for the first time in 2025 (meaning it met or exceeded growth targets, implying operational profitability or at least surplus in certain metrics after expenses). This marks a milestone amid explosive growth, though ongoing CBA negotiations show debates over how to split future revenues (players pushing for higher shares like 25-30%, league offering lower). Losses may have narrowed or flipped in some accounting, but the NBA’s support continues as a strategic investment to nurture the league toward full independence and value growth.
@beyoncegarden Notice how everyone recognizes this person is trans and yet everyone who disagrees with her still acknowledges her preferred gender as a woman without issue lol
Funny how that works
@ReasonUnchains@RichardK4@ShamsCharania@mikegolicjr When the government subsidizes something, who actually pays for it? It's no different when the NBA subsidizes the WNBA. NBA fans that actually go to NBA games will be footing the bill for this failed WNBA experiment that they won't let die.
@ReasonUnchains@RichardK4@ShamsCharania@mikegolicjr ...you think they became billionaires without a paying fanbase?! Have you even been to a game and seen the costs?! The NBA is funded by paying customers, without people tuning in or buying merch teams fail (see Supersonics, Vancouver Grizzlies and New Orleans Jazz).
Yea I get all of that and I’m sure the NBA has all of those consideration in mind since it’s primarily their money on the line
It just doesn’t make sense to me why people care if the WNBA uses the NBA to finance them
If the billionaire NBA owners didn’t feel it was financially viable, then they would just shut the league down entirely
They’re not doing this out of the kindness of their hearts lmao
If you want women's sports to survive securely you can't hinge it on the "charity" of billionaires.
What if they decide to cut off that funding? What if the people that have invested in expanding the WNBA decide they'd like to make money or fold?
It is important that the WNBA find a way to end up financially sustainable. Raising player salaries so the best female athletes can focus their lives on the WNBA and not have to spend time on offseason leagues, other jobs, etc... will help with that.
But the WNBA losing money isn't irrelevant to the long term conversation.
@revell46990@HarryNockz@iamAtheistGirl Paul claiming that 500 other anonymous people supposedly saw the risen Jesus doesn’t prove anything
There are modern day resurrections with supposed eye witnesses. Should we also believe those as well?
@HarryNockz@iamAtheistGirl But you can't find any contemporary who denies it. My reply shows quite clearly that Jesus wandering around for 40 days meeting people so the 500 is probably an understatement.

@LeeJunction02@limesaxt0@nickfoster95@rabbitholebot Exactly
Just because you’re bilingual doesn’t mean there aren’t more then two languages
Just because you’re bisexual, doesn’t mean there are only two genders lol
And yet the point is the same
Just because you make a decision that harms you, does not mean you don’t deserve assistance
In no other situation would a bank give a 17 year old working a part time job tens of thousands of dollars in loans, with no money down and no immediate plan to pay them back
