Virginia has to have a budget by June 30, or police officers and teachers will go unpaid starting July 1. We got here because the Democrats can’t reach an agreement on whether to give data centers a $2B tax break. In order to pay teachers, police officers, and pave the roads, that lost revenue has to be made up somewhere. In many respects, average Virginians end up paying the price through higher property taxes, sales taxes, and income taxes. Happening Now: @GovernorVA is unveiling lawmakers compromise to include a legal recreational marijuana market in the budget alongside @KrizekForVA and @lashrecseaird. Retail sales will start on July 1, 2027 provided a budget is passed. The State tax will start at 6% before rising to 8% in 2029. Aird says the number of stores will be capped at 350 stores.
