Hitzeflaute is pushing European 15-minute spot prices to new records, with Belgium hitting EUR 1,038/MWh at the 20:45 CET window for delivery on Wednesday. 🔴 The Netherlands hit EUR 902/MWh in the same window. Denmark's DK1 zone reached EUR 787/MWh. Germany, Europe's largest power market, came in at EUR 747/MWh, its highest 15-minute price on record. The mechanism is the same across all of them. ⚡ During the solar peak, CCGTs are pushed out of merit entirely. When the sun drops, they have to ramp back up fast. With wind also low across the region, there is very little to cushion that transition. Germany's residual load stood at 51.5 GW at that hour, 10.4 GW above seasonal norms, according to Montel EQ data. A heatwave with low wind means cooling demand peaks exactly when the grid has the least flexibility to respond. 🌡️ Longer days keep temperatures elevated well into the evening, stretching that window further. Belgium's prices stand out even in this context. More dependent on imports than its neighbours, it is more exposed when the wider market is stretched. Whether the forward curve has fully priced the early July heat continuation is the open question for traders. 📈 📊 Track live price movements with Montel EQ.
