US planes are conducting operations in Iran from UK bases. And “sold us out” seems a bit much. If the US valued a coalition for this war, it could have tried to build one instead of threatening to attack Denmark and trashing our coalition allies from Iraq & Afghanistan.

When this is over, the western part of NATO will never be the same. Spain, England, France and Italy have sold us out, as they too often have a history of doing. Eastern European nations are the heart of NATO. They spend money on defense, know how to fight and love the US. France particularly deserves fault and blame. From supporting China and Russia at the UN to denying Americans overflight rights, they’re doing what they’ve always done - showing weakness, while cutting deals with terrorists. (The reason the US has a Marine Corps and Navy is unlike France, we refused to pay a ransom to the Barbary Pirates. France is always happy to cut a deal.) Wars have unintended consequences as nations show their true colors. NATO will never be the same, and Western European weakness and acquiescence is the cause.

@gerardtbaker Yes, Trump was unreliable, volatile and intemperate in response to Europe freeloading off the US defense umbrella and playing tariff games for 70 years, all the while lecturing America on foreign policy. Half of the US finds Trump’s reactions to be cathartic.

The casuistry here is remarkable. This is the simple reality: Like most Americans, most Europeans think this war is a bad idea.Their governments are being asked to take a huge risk by a man who has proved unreliable, volatile and intemperate over and over. Who would do that?

I think Canada, Denmark and Sweden should declare war on Honduras and demand that the US allow us to set up bases in Florida so we can start bombing Tegucigalpa immediately. PS Sorry to the people of Honduras - this is merely an illustration of US stupidity. We are not going to start a war.

I agree with some of this directionally, but my God the refusal to acknowledge that Trump has worked assiduously to poison the alliance and heap all the blame on Europe is just water-carrying hackery.
Saying "NATO will never be the same, and Western European weakness and acquiescence is the cause" is like writing a movie review when you missed the first half of the movie.

living in Germany truly does feel like living in the year 1284 sometimes. its Good Friday so today all the shops are closed and dancing is illegal. tomorrow i must walk into town to purchase some milk and eggs to make my Easter bread, because the shops are once again all closed on Sunday (as they are every Sunday)

@leonard_bayard @McFaul They initially had 20 Sea Harriers, this with the Argentinian mainland some 400 miles distant. The Argentines had 24 Pucará aircraft stationed on the islands with more operating from the mainland.
