I’m currently on a mission to hitchhike the world. Resting in Lima, Peru for a few days nursing a broken ankle. Got a few days to kill so I figured I’d start writing up semi-regular updates both for me and my memories but also anyone who could find this interesting. As a quick catchup to this point: I started in Bogota, Colombia. I’ve been working my way south ever since. Since writing about Colombia would take too long, for now I’m going to skip it. Instead I’ll start a month and a half or so ago when I crossed the border from Ipiales, Colombia into Tulcan, Ecuador. I had been hitching at this point for close to 2 months and was getting pretty tired of it so I decided to buy a children’s scooter and attempt to make it to Quito (roughly ~250km). Along the way I met Jonathan, a guy from Colombia riding his bike to Chile with his cats. I spent the next 2 days with Jonathan after we camped out on the side of the road and met a family from Argentina traveling north in their van. Unfortunately for my scooter, this time, the Andes won. By the end of my 70km ride that I did in the ~10 hours on this thing, the brakes had completely melted. It was back to hitching. Over the next few days I wildcamped on the outskirts of Ibarra and was making my way to Quito when a family picked me up (the Peñafiels) and after smelling me offered me a shower and a place to stay for the night. I ended up staying with them for a few days and made my way into the Amazon where I met Brandon who showed me around his town of Puyo and made me try a bunch of traditional foods which included guinea pig, beetle larvae, and some fish wrapped in banana leaves. After visiting the Peñafiels one last time before I left for Peru, I ended up stopping at Cotopaxi, Cuenca, Loja and Macara along the way, finding a place to camp out in each. I got to Macara pretty late after meeting a family that owned the bus company and after my persistent refusal they ended up hooking me up on a bus for free anyway. That night I slept in front of the fire station - first time in this journey I’ve actually had to sleep on the street. Not as bad as you’d think to be honest. Pics attached. Till next time!
