21 years ago, at around this time, I was midway through my second beer of the night. I was looking into the glass and could see through the bottom. I stopped swallowing, but continued to look. There was nothing there. Nothing but cloudy uncertainty and turmoil. After a few seconds, I put the glass down and said to my old friend (who has never drank): "Thats my last drink". He looked at me, laughed, and said "Yeah right". Up until tonight, that has been my last drink. As a single guy in my early 30s in rural Ireland, deciding not to drink seemed like giving up on life itself. At that time, alcohol was woven into the very fabric of society. I was consumed by it, and my life wasnt really going anywhere. The first few years were very difficult. Incredibly so. But I used the downtime to complete a masters. I literally threw myself into the work, shutting everything else out, and passed with distinction. Then came the crash. The great financial crisis. I had just started a PhD. It felt like my plans had been rugpulled. Instead of forging a career at the cutting age of tech, within a short time, I was in a court battle with the bank, who had called in the student debt. I moved back in with my parents, and almost stagnated. I then took work that paid graduate level and gradually got back on track. It was tough. I then met my now wife Yesi and moved to New York. A world of possibilities awaited. Somehow, be it timing, or circumstantial, things have once again not worked out as planned. Sometimes I think I set my dreams too high. One major plus was the birth of our son, Sam. We are so blessed, that while it looked like that possibility had passed us by, a beautiful healthy baby arrived. He is a joy. I continue to do my best. Now Im also hustling for Sam's benefit too. Sometimes that brings added pressure. Ive been a stay at home dad for 2yrs. Now it is time to re-emerge. Ive been looking, but so far have been over-looked. Age may be a factor. But I have a lot to offer. I know an opportunity will come along, and when it does, I will do what I always do - give it 100%. If i had finished that beer and ordered another one 21yrs ago, I dont know where Id be now. That moment was the opportunity for change. Thank God I took it. There might not have been another realization like that. For me, despite the many ups and downs, life has been immeasurably better without alcohol. There is clarity. Maybe thats why I Bitcoin.
