Received over 500 applications for the associate role I was hiring for earlier this year. The person I hired mostly hired himself. Here is what he did for those trying to land an Associate role in VC: -He reached out to several mutual contacts to make sure I even saw his application and took a call / made it impossible to ignore -Came prepared with an airtable of deals I might like that fit the thesis that were actively raising -Was prepared with examples of deals he sourced, how he manages companies from a CRM perspective, memos written, etc. -Thoroughly researched most of my portfolio and had tangible questions on each -Had his own opinions on market opportunities and some investments that were probably terrible/great ideas -When I mentioned that I didn't have payroll setup he offered to set it up entirely before even being hired (as well as a better CRM) tldr: Act like you already have the job and outwork everyone

Well hello Twitter For the last 2 years I have been obsessively covering NFTs on the @OverpricedJPEGs podcast (literally. My first episode came out Nov 12, 2021.) It’s been QUITE a ride. On multiple occasions I joked that I started my podcast at the top of the market so if I ever left, you would know it was the bottom. Well folks, I might have been right. While I am not leaving JPEGs or the podcasting game, I am expanding my content. Leaving behind the explicitly-JPEG world in which I used to reside. This change came when I started doing daily coverage of the Sam Bankman-Fried trial - something that brought in a whole new wave of subscribers, for which I am very grateful! This was also a few weeks before this latest ~bull~ (are we calling it that yet?) market surged forth. Which is all to say: you’re welcome. As I predicted, the NFT market came back just as soon as I stopped covering it 😂😂😂 In all seriousness, I could not be more grateful for all of the people who have been with me on this journey for the past 2 years, and especially to @bankless who gave me a shot. If you haven’t seen any of it yet, please do go check out my more recent content on YouTube or the podcast feed, and you’ll get a sense of what the future holds. I will still be covering crypto + NFTs (I’ll never leave) but I’m also looking to cover other parts of finance and tech. Yesterday I fact checked a very dubiously written Wall Street Journal article. For now, I’m putting out content Monday - Thursday and we’ll see if I’m able to maintain that pace. There is a non-zero chance that I basically just start turning @matt_levine columns into daily videos. (Call me @ matt) The working title for this new show is (quite creatively) The Carly P Reilly Show, which I intend to regularly abbreviate to the CPR show. I have not yet made the full transition to this in my branding, so stay tuned for that, I suppose. I may also decide to spin up an entirely new podcast feed for the CPR show, so as to keep the current OPJ feed warm for when I do more NFT stuff (for example, @Zeneca, @fonkydonk and I are hopping onto the pod THIS friday to do a normal recap episode on the NFT market). As a closing note: -- OPJ NFT holders: you are still eligible to go and redeem your bottles of gin. Over 8 yrs ago someone singlehandedly pulled me out of poverty. Knew him because I trained with his wife who is a professional athlete. He was leading a group at Citi and I desperately wanted to be an analyst. Didnt have the resume for a fancy banking job but grew up in public housing and the job was to help finance affordable housing projects. He called me and said “I will not get this job for you. However I will refer you and teach you whatever I can”. I got the job. It moved me out to SF which completely changed the trajectory of my life. One year in I received my first big analyst bonus. $20,000. I couldnt believe it. I felt ashamed. That was so much money. I messaged him and asked if they would take it back. This was his response. I read this often.
