IPOB Sacks Nnamdi Kanu as Leader as It Reorganises Leadership Structure The proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has suspended the offices of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, and the Director of Radio Biafra following a leadership restructuring. The decision was reached during a full Directorate meeting on Wednesday, where the group reviewed intelligence reports allegedly linked to communications from Kanu while in Sokoto prison. This was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by Mazi Chikadibia Edoziem, Head of IPOB’s Directorate of State. IPOB said a Directorate of State will now manage its affairs, stressing that the movement was founded by Biafrans in the diaspora and not a single individual, and that no one person can dissolve its highest structure. The group said the action was taken due to concerns that “unguarded communications from Sokoto prison” had contributed to arrests and deaths of its members. It also raised concerns over alleged plans by some individuals to form a militia that could worsen vi%lence in the region, noting that DSS monitors Kanu’s communications and visitors. According to IPOB, the suspension is meant to prevent “reckless assumption of authority and unguarded utterances” that could lead to further arrests, torture, or deaths of Biafran youths. It added that any criminal actions carried out under the suspended offices would no longer be linked to IPOB, stressing it would not be held responsible for activities of unauthorised individuals or groups. The development follows reports that Kanu had dissolved the 3rd Directorate of State and set up a 4th administration, appointing US-based Mazi Chris Nwaọgụ as the new head to oversee operations under his directive.

Most shocking is your insult. You are an international celebrity whom Nigeria is proud of. Coming to insult me on my Instagram profile with such vulgar words should be beneath you. Yes, I am aware that you were upset at my appeal to you not to use an international platform, such as the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to give publicity to bandits and terrorists. I am also aware that Peter Obi praised you for doing that, which may have made you feel compelled to defend him. I did that because while your intention may be good and you think you are pressuring the government, the actual effect of what you did is to give publicity to the terrorists and help them spread fear, recruit new members, and raise funds. However, after Michelle Obama held up the #BringBackOurGirls banner in May of 2014, the publicity resulted in Boko Haram separating the girls into different groups and keeping them in various camps, while increasing security around them, which made it literally impossible to rescue them. Thereafter, Boko Haram's recruitment was boosted, and their finances exploded, and six months later, ISIS announced that they had merged with Boko Haram to form ISWAP. That is what I was trying to explain to you. Just like Margaret Thatcher said, "publicity is the oxygen of terrorism." It is also why the UNESCO Handbook for Journalists on Terrorism Coverage urges public figures not to grant terrorists any publicity. I hope you now understand my point of view.
