Bloomberg really twisting the data here. The main reason for the drop is the removal of $7500 federal IRA credit. EV sales dropped 40.2% from last year Q1, but Telsa's sales only dropped by 24.3%, outperforming other major EV makers by far. Saying consumers "increasingly embrace hybrid" is quite the stretch. Hybrid's market share has barely budged from Q2 2025 (20.5%), to this past Q1 (20.9%).

Public school is primarily a jobs program and voter aggregation system. The data are very clear. Spending doesn't correlate to results. School quality has an extremely minimal impact. Education outcomes are entirely dependent on the student and their family. No amount of education spending will change that.

This a computer, and you likely own one. It's a hydraulic analog computer. It’s essentially a machined analog computer that computes with fluid instead of electronics: pump pressure is routed through passages that act like wires, while spool valves, springs, orifices, and check balls perform the equivalents of comparators, logic gates, delays, and one-way elements. What it “calculates” is the machine’s current operating state, whether conditions have crossed a threshold to justify changing state, how strongly to apply each output, and how quickly to make that transition without instability or shock. It does this by continuously balancing forces—pressure on different valve areas against spring preload and feedback pressure—so each valve shifts only when one hydraulic condition outweighs another, while restrictions and chambers add timing and smoothing. In plain English, it is a real-time fluidic state machine that solves “if this pressure is greater than that one, route flow here; otherwise hold, delay, soften, or override” entirely through geometry and oil. They're used in every car with an automatic transmission, where it makes choices like what gear to be in and how hard to apply clutches, etc.... And some dude worked it all out on paper back in the 1960s.

These are so frustrating to receive. A building owner sent me this video of a 2BR Upper West Side apartment he just got back, but after he empties it out it will stay vacant going forward. The tenant lived here since 1985 and the current legal rent is $940.01 Because of the 2019 HSTPA law, a building owner is expected to fully renovate this unit to current building code (that’s a good thing), but also expected to lose money in perpetuity at the same time. This 2BD would need well over $100,000 to clean out the debris, comply with lead laws, upgrade major systems, remove the Sheetrock + much more just to make this into an apartment a tenant would actually want to live in with dignity. But the law says the $940 rent would still end up below the estimated $1300/mo it costs to operate the apt which covers insurance, property taxes, labor, fuel, and capital expenditures for the building. So if the new rent falls below the operating cost, the owner would still lose money every month and never see $1 back from the $100k+ renovation. Why would the state expect anyone to lose money like this? What bank would ever provide a loan with no path to repayment? Why do we acknowledge the cost to build housing but ignore what it takes to preserve older housing? Why do we accept this policy when thousands of New Yorkers are searching for housing in the midst of the worst supply crunch we’ve ever seen? So frustrating.

But, after July 1st, Idaho government school districts will no longer be able to: -contribute taxpayer funds to a teachers' union -provide teachers with paid leave to engage in union operations and activism, unless the union reimburses the district for the value of the teacher's time out of the classroom -pay teachers' union dues for them with taxpayer funds -use public payroll systems and personnel to deduct union dues from teachers' paychecks -provide more of a teacher's personal information to a union than is disclosable under the Idaho Public Records Act, unless the teacher authorizes the disclosure -require teachers to meet or interact with a teachers' union if they do not wish to do so -distribute communications or membership solicitations on behalf of a teachers' union

Tesla just taped out an AI chip that matches Nvidia's H100 on one specific workload. It can't train a language model. It can't run general ML research. It runs INT4, INT2, and FP8 integer math, and almost nothing else. That's the entire strategy. Nvidia's H100 is built to do everything. FP16 training, FP32 science, transformer attention, sparse operations. Every one of those capabilities costs die area, power, and cooling. The chip ends up drawing 700 watts and 80GB of HBM because it has to serve every customer in AI, from OpenAI to a 3-person startup. Tesla has one customer: a car. A car needs one thing: low-precision inference at the edge, 30 times per second, forever. Nothing else. So they stripped the chip down to that. No FP16 training. No HBM. No general-purpose scheduler. AI5 targets INT4, INT2, and FP8, the exact precisions autonomous driving models use after quantization. Everything else got cut. Tesla claims a single AI5 matches H100 performance on their workload. A dual setup rivals Blackwell. At a fraction of the cost and power. The full AI5 computer targets 2,000-2,500 TOPS vs 300-500 for AI4. 5-8x more compute on the exact math a car needs, with zero capability for anything else. This is the Google TPU playbook and the Amazon Trainium playbook. General-purpose chips have to be good at everything. Specialized chips only have to be good at the one workload that pays for them. If that workload ships in millions of units a year, the math works. Nvidia's business is selling one chip to every AI customer. Tesla's business is selling cars, and they just took Nvidia out of their own bill of materials. Fabbed at TSMC Arizona and Samsung Texas. The chip Tesla's entire autonomy roadmap depends on no longer routes through the Taiwan Strait.
