This happened because the goal is to protect the Iranian energy infrastructure. Israel hit a portion of the Pars field, American compagnies recieved a response in kind on a few fields in the region. If Iran wipes out all the oil infrastructure of Americans in one shot then there's nothing to protect at home and all their infrastructure will be gone too. The goal is to establish deterrence to protect Iranian infrastructure.
