@clairlemon Not to mention the fact that there was no scientific consensus on tobacco’s harm for decades (centuries?) until there was. Then there was no action until decades after there WAS scientific consensus. Not a poster child for appropriate response to a catastrophic societal threat

This misses the point. There still aren't any RCTs demonstrating that smoking causes lung cancer. It's just that society has accepted that a mountain of correlational evidence--on something as pernicious as lung cancer--is worth acting upon. x.com/nickgillespie/…

A lot of this comes down to poorer kids just not knowing what to do. I didn't know that I had to apply for an internship in the WINTER of my sophomore year to get a sophomore summer internship to leverage into a junior summer internship to get a full-time offer senior year.

@conor64 A stream of public health statements proven false and policies proved ineffective - but “in our best interests” - sometimes hours after they were made. 15 days to flatten the curve; Wear cloth masks, not N95; lab leak was impossible. Decades to rebuild trust after that.

A question for everyone: survey data suggests that by the end of the Covid-19 emergency trust in public health institutions had decreased significantly. If you are among the people who reacted that way, why specifically? I'm hoping for long, diverse, individualized answers.

@PolitiBunny Don’t shoot the messenger - I think a vibrant democracy requires viable candidates from at least two sides. Did we watch different debates, because there is really no debate about WES’ tragic performance. She got Jay Jones on a silver platter and still couldn’t seal the deal.

I am not moving my family and businesses from Virginia. But something sinister just happened here and I need to take action. I have lived here since I was 6 years old. I have done my share to help build this state up. I have owned a business here since I was 24 years old. I have employed thousands of Virginians. I have invested millions in plant and equipment. I have coached sports, been a leader in scouts, run internship programs, and participated in local philanthropy. I am a political independent. I am for whomever gives me less government. I didn’t get that in the last election. The Virginia Democratic Party has come into power with proposals that seem to be almost comically evil. Massive, business-killing tax hikes. Dramatic increase in regulatory scope. Socialist policies around things like rent control, entitlement spending exploding. Sweeping limits on law enforcement and a reduction in crime consequences that make us less safe. We have went from a Top-5 business friendly state to a place where many of the people in my business community are discussing relocating their business out of the state. I watched this happen in Maryland. I can’t let it happen here. I hate politics. Hate it. I don’t want to run for political office. I have never given money to a state politician. I don’t try to influence policy. I try not to talk about politics too much on X. It’s a boring argument. I also think arguments about R vs D are boring. I have known plenty of moderate Democrats in Virginia that I felt were good public servants. However, the Democrat majority that was recently sworn in is like nothing we have ever seen here. These people are not centrists, and they represent a fringe view that is far to the left of the majority of Virginians. I am now compelled to get much more involved with the political process here in Virginia. We have to grab the wheel before we drive off the cliff. Who should I talk to about becoming more involved in organizing opposition to the current proposals? Who can I support to challenge them in court? Who should I talk to about supporting candidates for future elections that will bring us back to the policies that have made Virginia so prosperous in the past? Looking for specific people I should link up with. That could be Republicans or Democrats or Independents. I know there are many other Virginians from across the political spectrum that feel the way I do. Virginia is worth fighting for.

@rossiadam It’s become a winner-take-all mentality. People on both sides have relinquished their ability to reason about particular issues and replaced logic with slogans. Not sure the way forward other than to unite everyone who is disillusioned by both parties.

@customersu35387 @FAANews Apparently, airlines were paying up to $1k per passenger to give up their seats. So @FlyFrontier saved $4k by refusing to let me, my wife, and my kids check in. Then resold our tickets for how much??? And charged us an extra $k for the inconvenience. Disgraceful

@customersu35387 Here is the line for Spirit. Somehow they managed to keep online check in and their kiosks working. On top of it all, they charged us over $1000 in rebooking fees, and left us stranded until Saturday. Hey @FAANews, is this legal?

At SJU airport, trying to board a flight with @FlyFrontier airlines. They disabled online check in and check in by kiosk. Everyone online for an hour just to check in, still make it 50 minutes before flight and they deny check-in. Wonder how much they are reselling out tix for

The cyclist. When riding on sidewalks (where legal), pedestrian rules apply. At a crosswalk, you get off your bike and walk it across. In some jurisdictions, that's legally required, and it's for safety to prevent things like what happened here. Given the stopping distance, there was no way the driver of the car could have done anything at all to stop the collision.

Wild clip: A bicyclist blasted through a crosswalk in the dark and slammed straight into a car that was rolling through a yield sign. So here’s the question… Who’s actually at fault here? The driver — or the cyclist flying in at full speed with no visibility? Thoughts? ⬇️ 🇺🇸

@TonyLaneNV The engineer who designed the intersection. Biker has right of way with no sign. But hard for driver to reasonably yield given visibility. Should be a light.

The Giants currently own the No. 2 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. They already have a franchise quarterback, but a lot of the teams behind them don’t. They could be positioned to trade down for a king’s ransom this offseason.
