I strongly condemn the arrest and detention, yet again, of Iranian human rights hero #NasrinSotoudeh whose case and cause I first took up as a member of Parliament in 2011 and have represented ever since; who was convicted in a sham trial in 2018 and sentenced to a total of 38 years in prison and 148 lashes, which I characterized then as a "virtual death sentence for a woman in her late 50s"; who, in ill health, was released on medical furlough before this recent arbitrary detention - while her husband Reza Khandan remains in prison - amidst a wave of massive repression in Iran, where it has been reported that over 30,000 were massacred in two days on January 8th and 9th, followed by an unending wave of mass arrests, torture in detention and extrajudicial executions, amidst the "fog of war" of Iranian missiles raining down on the Gulf State neighbours and Israel. @TheRWCHR and I, in joint partnership with @IJCollective, call for Nasrin Sotoudeh's immediate release and call on the Canadian Parliament, leaders of the G7 and the human rights community to join the call for her immediate release and for an end to the Iranian regime's massive domestic and transnational repression and assassination.

2/3 There is a strong likelihood that Mr. Masjoody's murder is an example of political violence, which we condemn in all its forms. The murder may also constitute transnational repression, an issue on which the IJC has long warned Canada's policymakers.

📢Today, as Mr. Kazem Gharibabadi, Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs of Iran, speaks before the UN Human Rights Council, we announce our intention to recommend that he - along with several of his colleagues - be #sanctioned for complicity in crimes against humanity and other grave human rights violations. The Human Rights Council was established to uphold the highest standards in the promotion and protection of human rights. Granting a platform to senior representatives of a regime that has been credibly accused of widespread and systematic human rights violations, including the repression of peaceful protest, arbitrary detention, torture, and the execution of political dissidents, risks undermining the Council’s credibility and the trust placed in it by victims worldwide. #Iran’s record is well documented by successive UN mechanisms, including the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran, which has detailed grave violations arising from the state’s violent suppression of peaceful protesters. Survivors, families of victims, and political prisoners continue to seek #justice and accountability. Human rights institutions must remain steadfast in their mandate: to protect victims, confront impunity, and uphold international law. Tomorrow marks six years since the IRGC shot down Ukrainian airliner PS752, killing 176 people — including 85 people who called Canada home. We stand with the families who continue to mourn their loved ones. As Iranians bravely stand up to the Ayatollahs and the IRGC that keep them in power, this anniversary is a reminder of the Iranian regime’s threat to its own people, the region, and the world.
