@SrDOMBPLWCR @BhopalDivision @RailwaySeva Train now delayed by 700 min. So not making up. Also, it was waiting outside Bhopal Jn for 50+ min even when multiple platforms were vacant. Train moved only after registering complaint. Please show proof that the platform/segment was occupied during that period. @RailMinIndia

@RailwaySeva @BhopalDivision This auto-reply by no means is a satisfactory resolution. 1. What are steps being taken to make up time for the rest of the journey? 2. What's action has been taken on persons responsible? 3. What is the compensation to passengers suffering the delay? @RailMinIndia @PMOIndia

If our notion of self-worth comes from the economic value we add, or if it comes our intellectual pretense (*cough*), AI may pose a serious challenge to our self-worth. On the other hand no one takes up activities like taking care of children, teaching children, taking care of the elderly, coming back to farming leaving a well paying job, going into the forest as rangers because they love the forest, local temple priests who do the daily rituals even when no one shows up at the temple, classical musicians who practise daily and perform for even very small crowds - none of them do it because those activities pay well. They will be unaffected by AI. Humanity may organize itself more towards such activity.

Ordered veggies from @bigbasket_com. Opted out of the paper bag. Still got one… plus everything wrapped in plastic. More plastic than veggies - but delivered in paper bag. Ridiculous. Never again! Time to reimagine packaging. @NITIAayog @PMOIndia

A few years ago, city bus service in Odisha had fare slabs like ₹5, 7, 10, 13, 15… up to ₹25 or ₹30. Conductors often struggled with change, leading to delays, arguments, and irritated passengers and staff. As managing director of the company, I discussed the problem with @PrashanthBachu, a brilliant urban mobility expert. He suggested: “Simplify it. Make it ₹5–10–15–20…” Our team was very hesitant. As a govt company, we couldn’t raise fares. This meant we could only reduce fares to simplify the slabs — ₹7 → ₹5, ₹13 → ₹10, a clear revenue drop ! Prashanth said it wouldn’t. This sounded illogical but his reasoning was brilliant: • Faster ticketing reduces freeloaders, those who get off before the conductor reaches them. • Happier passengers and staff mean smoother service. • Globally, fares are in easy multiples. We took the risk and implemented it. Result? Everything improved. We had fewer complaints and happier staff. And the biggest surprise: Revenue went up by 3%. Sometimes, simplifying is smarter than increasing. @CRUT_BBSR

You’re part right—BRT capacity is below metro In #Indore, demand is ~10k pphpd—perfect for BRT. But they never ran enough buses: 50 planned in 2009, now it should’ve been 100+, yet only 35 operate Now you’re replacing it with flyover just 5k pphpd capacity. The irony is painful
Rohit Shinde@rohitshinde121

There's a misconception that bus systems take off a lot of density off the road, and so it reduces congestion. The truth is far more nuanced. 1. BRTS superior demands on demand density. In dense corridors with high peak loads, metros and rails actually outperform BRTS. 2. BRTS makes sense where ridership is high enough to justify dedicated lanes, but not so high that buses saturate. 3. It only works if lanes are truly exclusive. If right-of-way can't be protected, BRT becomes a failure. Before I put in the math, let's understand what bus bunching is and what headway spacing is. Bus bunching up happens when small delays cause buses that were evenly spaced to clump up at the same bus stop together. Headway space is the gap between vehicles. If there's less headway space, then probability of buses bunching up increases. And that's inefficient. Based on practical experience, regular buses require 2-5 minutes of headway. That reduces to 60 seconds for BRTS. And that's why people think it is more efficient. You cannot push this below one minute. Transit math: Capacity = vehicles/hr × passengers/vehicle BRTS tops out ~15k pphpd before bunching. Bus capacity cannot be more than 200. And you can have at most 60 buses an hour. That gives you a max capacity of 12k passengers an hour. Metro does 40–70k+. For example, Mumbai Metro 1 can transport 65k passengers at peak hours. BRTS works, but really in very niche use cases. In most cases, in India, we're better off building metros.

Indore joins the list of cities dismantling its Bus Rapid Transit System(BRTS). BRTS was touted by lot of urban planners as model for urban mobility (remember couple of IIT profs even pitching it in Delhi as an alternative against metro) Perhaps the truth is that BRTS works on paper, not in cities where lanes are few, lane enforcement tend to be very weak, and mixed traffic is chaos. So BRTS kind of initiatives done to decongest often ends up choking roads.

@prasannavishy That's entirely wrong assessment. #BRT is meant to increase capacity where roads r narrow. Removal of BRT in #Indore simply represents poor understanding of #UrbanTransport & lack of leadership. My simple Q: In 3yrs, flyover will have traffic jams, will the Mayor pull it down?
