There was a theory that the Roche game plan was to herd traditionalists out of diocesan Masses into the Ecclesia Dei institutions; then shut the institutions so that any trads who survived would be corralled into the SSPX, then finally excommunicate the whole SSPX and all who follow it. The Pope’s recent address to the French bishops shows that that plan, if it ever existed, has been abandoned.
