I've a ton of new followers recently, so I'd like to say: Hello! I'm a writer, editor, and educator who believes that experimental literature can be as fun as it's demanding. If you're ever looking for book recs -or even my own work- check out my website! shorturl.at/uQgpX

Back in 2017 the first staff pick I ever wrote as a bookseller was for Coover’s Universal Baseball Association and I only ever sold one copy of it (to @ZIssenberg, by complete chance). With this new NYRB reissue, I think we can get that number up to two copies!

@propaguleco @DoubleEBooks' debut book in the past year was a great read! I'm also quite excited for Missouri Williams' next novel later this year. A few years ago, Sergio De La Pava told me that Australia was in a boom and I agree - Nicholas John Turner and Alexis Wright are must reads.

Whenever I finish a new manuscript, I like to celebrate by rewatching my favorite TV show! Mawaru Penguindrum is a maximalist, magical real drama about many things, but mostly the generational impact of terrorism on families. It's a wildly strange, bittersweet masterpiece.

@Teaweave He's great! The translations for Dream Story are fantastic, and his play Das Weite Land was adapted into Tom Stoppard's excellent Undiscovered Country.

And done! The first draft of my latest manuscript is done, just under 80k words. What a great exercise to keep steady pace over the past month. Now for the real fun, editing this piece until it lands exactly how I want. No matter how inspired the momentum, I can always improve.

My writing's taken off! A week and some of self-study helped me find the particular textures needed for this new project. I can't read while writing, but I'm happily making the goal of at least 2k words daily. For me, it's necessary to have the correct playlist while drafting.

@alvinlu I was lucky to have a long talk with Gass' editor just before the pandemic. We briefly discussed The Tunnel - how it had been drafted and edited for so long. Apparently, Robert Alter's review made a great impression! That review and Gass' chat with John Gardner make a good pair.

Was in an experimentally inclined MFA when The Tunnel came out. My memory of its reception was it seemed far from assured, snotty kids wondering if it was worth the wait. At a time when Acker, Leyner, DFW, Vollmann were at major publishers (what), was it even relevant? [cont]

@cklein421 That's understandable! I recommend starting with The Inquisitor's Manual, which is a novel that appropriates the structure of the Benjy section from The Sound & The Fury, but each chapter has its own set of voices. After that, Fado Alexandrino is a fantastic work.

@ZIssenberg I read land at the end of the world, and did not get on with it. I’m perfectly willing to take the view that I was the problem here. I also own Inquisitor’s Manual. Any reading order advice? I’m, unfortunately, reading English only.

May the memory of António Lobo Antunes remain a blessing! One of my favorite artists passed today, but he has left behind a vast and generative legacy. Few students of Faulkner could modulate with such a pristine accuracy. His metaphors haunt each page with terrorizing throttle.

António Lobo Antunes is one of the greatest writers alive and working today! From the sheer leaps and bounds he takes to evolve Faulkner's styles, to his modulation of forms, there is no peer. Thanks to these great Porturguese translators, you can read him in English too.

I'm thankful to everyone who also pitched in during Archipelago's Winter donation drive. They let me know that your support was invaluable. They're currently reviving the Scandinavian giant Birgitta Trotzig, with different translators for each of her works. Support the project!

Open Letter books supports translations of contemporary masters at work now! I'm thankful to receive the mixed-form of Rusana Bardarska's To Essay, which blends fiction, essay, and poetic meter in playful flight. Do yourself a favor and grab all their Énard translations too!

Look what came in the mail! How exciting to receive book mail from the lovely presses hard at work on stellar translations. Thanks to @open_letter and @archipelagobks for sending me works they thought would be up my alley. I'll read them cozily with Moshi at my side.

May the memory of Michael Silverblatt remain a blessing! For so many people I've met around the world, his series of interviews on Bookworm were a generous education. I recommend beginning with his interviews of Toni Morrison, Joseph McElroy, and William Gass.

The next great writer is here! Djamel Bouchenaki's debut novel comes out next year, but you can read an excerpt now at @MinorLits. He writes a simmering, musical descent into fury like Rachid Boudjedra, Mathias Ènard, and John Hawkes before him. Get to know this future titan!

I'm back to drafting and editing! And it feels like a great jog every time I return. Besides a new playlist to write alongside, I'm trying a new writing exercise. At either end of day, I'm copying sentences from novels with atmospheres I admire. It's slow and granular, but fun.
