Because…. **Yes, Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers (UFW) did organize their own informal border patrols in the mid-1970s, particularly during a 1973–1975 operation known as the "wet line" (a term derived from the derogatory slur "wetback" for undocumented Mexican migrants).**
This wasn't an official government Border Patrol but a union-run effort to block undocumented workers from crossing into the U.S., primarily to prevent them from being used as strikebreakers by growers during labor disputes (like a major lemon strike in Arizona).
Key details from historical accounts:
- Chavez's cousin, Manuel Chavez, led the operation along the Arizona-Mexico border near Yuma and San Luis.
- At its peak, it reportedly employed around 300 UFW members and cost the union up to $80,000 per week.
- The patrols aimed to intercept and turn back crossers, sometimes turning them over to the actual U.S. Border Patrol.
- Reports (from journalists, historians like Miriam Pawel in *The Crusades of Cesar Chavez*, and Frank Bardacke) describe instances of violence, including beatings, robberies, and other physical confrontations against migrants. Some accounts allege more severe abuses, though the extent and direct involvement of Chavez himself remain debated.
- The UFW also ran an "Illegals Campaign" to report undocumented workers to authorities and pressured the Border Patrol for more enforcement.
Chavez viewed undocumented immigration as a direct threat to his union's efforts to secure better wages and conditions for legal farmworkers (mostly Mexican American and documented migrants), arguing it undercut bargaining power and allowed growers to exploit cheap, vulnerable labor.
This part of his legacy is well-documented in sources like:
- Biographies and labor histories (e.g., Pawel's book, Bardacke's writings)
- Wikipedia's entry on Chavez (citing primary sources)
- Articles from outlets across the spectrum, including National Review, Latin Times, and academic pieces from Duke and JSTOR
It's one of the more controversial aspects of Chavez's record—often downplayed in mainstream celebrations of him as a civil rights icon, but frequently highlighted by critics of open borders or in discussions of his anti-illegal-immigration stance.
The timing of recent allegations (surfacing in 2026) has revived these older stories, as some see it as part of efforts to reframe or tarnish his image amid shifting views on immigration.

@SRCC @LeaderJohnThune Do not invoke cloture until we have 60 votes for the SAVE America Act.
I mean this respectfully, but we are not going to let this issue go.
The American people gave you the majority & we demand results.
We demand election integrity.
Pass the SAVE America Act!

Noncitizens should not be eligible for welfare. Period.
I don’t care if they are here legally.
I have filed HR 6854 to ban it.

@PattyMurray You are more devoted to illegal immigrants than to American citizens. Your priorities are completely backward.

The Democrats just decided to officially become the party of PUNCHING PUPPIES.
190 Democrats just voted to give illegal immigrants the RIGHT TO PHYSICALLY ABUSE American service dogs — serving with law enforcement protecting American citizens.
The level Democrats will go to protect illegal aliens instead of Americans is disturbing, disgusting, and dangerous.

@SenatorDurbin You created the crisis when you let them in and helped them stay.

I know you’re truly shocked but it turns out the same people against the Save America Act are also the ones overseeing massive fraud

Illegal Aliens from Mexico Indicted for Conspiracy to Manufacture and Distribute Methamphetamine Related to a Clandestine Lab in Calaveras County, California
“These illegal aliens allegedly operated a secret lab on American soil producing thousands of pounds of deadly drugs to poison our communities,” said @AGPamBondi. “This clandestine and illegal operation has now been dismantled – we will continue protecting Americans from the dangerous results of the prior administration’s open-border policies.”

@GavinNewsom You misplaced double that without any accountability. You are a disgrace to this state and to our country.

$200 BILLION IS ENOUGH TO:
- Double the annual per‑person spending on K–12 education.
- Expand the ACA tax credit for 7 years.
- Provide up to 2 million people the SNAP benefits they need.
- Provide a middle class tax break of $3,500.
Instead, we will spend it on an illegal war.
This is only the beginning. More money will be wasted. More lives will be lost.
