@waitbutwhy The red button guarantees your survival, the blue button risks your survival while gambling for everyone's survival. It's the chart again

Everyone in the world has to take a private vote by pressing a red or blue button. If more than 50% of people press the blue button, everyone survives. If less than 50% of people press the blue button, only people who pressed the red button survive. Which button would you press?

@zermeloztt @forkexecwait @martinmbauer it would be an interesting thought experiment to set the speed of information to be 100 m/s and see what happens.. i imagine a lot of equations with relativity would still work, things would just start getting crazy a lot more often. or maybe nothing would change

@zermeloztt @martinmbauer We can use any measure of distance/time as a unit for comparison here - meters, the radius of a hydrogen atom, etc. Planck length won't work because it's defined using c so it'll be 1 in the different universe too. MIT made a fun game related to this: gamelab.mit.edu/games/a-slower…

@forkexecwait @martinmbauer i guess what im having trouble imagining is a framework in which to make the comparison. my, admittedly scant, understanding is that time and space stretch and contract asspeeds approach c. do we then have a notion of distance and time that is independent so that we can ask that?

It's a deeply profound question about the universe, no one has an easy time with it like @martinmbauer implies with the tongue-in-cheek reply. The question asks why the speed of light isn't a different faster/slower value in relation to its current value. This is independent of the definition/choice of units. The speed of light is the speed limit of information, so nothing would happen in a universe with a speed of light of 0 m/s and everything would happen instantly with an infinite speed of light. Both break causality. But what about in between? Keeping our definition of a meter and a second constant, why isn't the speed of light 10 m/s? or 1,000,000,000 m/s? Some people defer to Maxwell's definition as an "explanation" which define the speed of light using the permeability and permittivity of space, but the same question can be asked about any universal constant - including permeability and permittivity. Ultimately it's asking why the universe is exactly the way that is and not something slightly different. What makes that determination, and when? How different would things be if the big bang went slightly differently - or was this decided before/outside that?

@forkexecwait @martinmbauer having a hard time with this question. light moves the fastest anything can move. what would it mean for it to be faster or slower? faster or slower in relation to what?

There has to be some word for this concept It's why designers from tech who design touchscreens like Jony Ive won't put a touch screen in a car but use real knobs Or why programmers don't actually like smart homes and smart appliances at all but want things analog Or why tech people raise their kids without mobile devices Like knowing things so well from inside of it (tech) that you choose to NOT use it because you know the negatives that come with it in specific contexts

Having a weird time replying to accounts that are openly automating their engagement. I appreciate that they’re open about it. It makes me still wonder who is doing it without stating it. Most of the time I get a vibe it’s AI because they don’t understand the context or subtext of a post. Otherwise it looks legit. Why automate replies? I get posts, to some degree (still would hope a human is replying to comments, and the content is ok). If I wanted to chat with Claude code, I’ve already got one.

@ryan_prend @GrantSlatton The examples on that page are laughably tame and people do write code like that all the time No, the point isn't to shorten it as much as possible just like you wouldn't shorten an essay into a phrase The point is to put in the deep thought that produces quality
