I think YouTubers should act more dumb. Why? Because it'll actually make producing YouTube videos easier, faster, and I think it'll make your content better too. Here’s 5 tricks to achieve just that which are so simple, they’re borderline dumb. Dumb trick #1 Everyone should write scripts for their videos. (It's just not possible to build in strong enough setups, payoffs, loops, stories, and metaphors without it, but that’s another story.) The thing is, what tends to happen when you write is, you type away for a few hours and then read it back and think “yeah this works” and off you go to film. My advice, STOP! Don’t film, walk away from your script and come back no sooner than 24 hours and read it again. Giving your brain space away from your writing will mean you recharge and come back with fresh eyes. This means you will start to spot the weakest areas in your scripts and you’ll do your watch time a world of good. You’ll spot what can be deleted, what doesn’t make sense, and what you could have done better so much easier. Dumb trick #2 This one's so simple it really does feel dumb. Let’s say you have an idea for a video and because you’re a good YouTuber, you live by the golden rule and make your thumbnail and title first. The thing is, even when you do this, trying to come up with a thumbnail and title for an idea can still be a nightmare. You can struggle to come up with the right words or the best way to create an appealing image and hours can go by while you get more and more frustrated. Here’s what you do to solve this. Nearly all of the best-performing videos I’ve ever produced have one thing in common. The thumbnail and title came to me so easily, there was no friction at all... they just seemed so simple and obvious. BUT the biggest flops I’ve ever had, well, I spent so long trying to work out how to package them up and they still failed. So the answer is simple, if there’s a lot of friction, just move on to an idea that feels way easier to package. Dumb trick #3 I used to really struggle (I still do if I’m honest) with trying to work out how to write a video script that explains complex things. I find myself second-guessing everything. “If I say X then a troll could argue Y.” “I can’t say that because it’s only true for 55% of the viewers, so if I do I'll have to waste time caveating what I’ve said to avoid confusion.” The answer is once again so simple it's dumb, but if you get to a sticking point where you feel overwhelmed, stop and just ask yourself, “What is the simplest way to describe this as I possibly can?” It's amazing what happens when you stop looking at all the complexities in an idea and focus on the dumbest, most simple explanation. How much easier videos are to make and how much better they are to watch too. Dumb trick #4 This one's a bit more advanced and more for the storytellers out there who want to push their editing and content further, but it's a game-changer. Many people when they edit will cut up the narrative, then add B-roll and text and graphics, then add music. But they’re doing it in the wrong order. What you should really do is cut up your narrative, and then add music that creates the right emotion to match the part of the story you are telling, THEN add your B-roll, text, and graphics. Your music can do so much of the heavy lifting when it comes to creating an emotional response. And when you pick that first and then pace all your cuts to match the tone of the music, it’ll make the viewing experience so much more natural and engaging. Pass this on to your editors too. I often find that editors are bad at picking tracks, but by doing the music first, even if you pick a “bad” track, you can make it work by timing all of the edit to it in a way that makes the music work. Ideally, you pick a great track, but music is subjective, dodgy pacing less so. Dumb Trick #5 "This dude can’t even get a million views on every video he makes and he’s teaching people how to grow YouTube channels!" Is a comment I remember really struggling to reply to. At first, I tried to reason with them and explain that niches are different, a million views in my own is pretty rare. Then I tried to argue back and thought about giving their own channel a damning review. Then I went back to educating them to try and help them understand. It wasn’t until I looked at the clock and 30 mins had vanished and I’d still got an empty comment reply box in front of me I realized this ultimate dumb time-saving YouTube trick. Just don’t respond to negative comments, don’t even think about them. You right now might not get many comments but you will, and when you make a video that blows up you’ll get loads of them, most will be mean because that’s what happens when you hit a new audience. So practise the art of moving on as fast as you can from anything you read, don’t allow yourself to feel anger, hate, or frustration, and don’t let your ego take over and force you to reply. Instead, reply to the comments with the least friction, the genius questions you can answer fast, anything that upsets you or makes you feel anxious or angry needs to be recognized as the time to step away and move on. I'm telling you now, if you write a reply setting the worlds to rights, they’ll probably see it and think “too long, ain't reading that” or they might not even see it at all! Hope this helped, good luck with your tricks and stay dumb :)

Dear @TeamYouTube, We understand that you're dealing with Invalid Traffic from a variety of sources, and we realize it's no small problem for you, the advertisers you do business with and the greater Creator economy. We understand that we may often become frustrated and often don't always ask the right questions when problems arise. We also understand that YouTube is a place we think of as home because of all the wonderful things you've provided us over the years and continue to provide. We further understand the reason why you might be limiting ads on content when your systems detect invalid traffic on the platform. We even understand why you're being so tight-lipped about what you're doing behind the scenes to mitigate Invalid Traffic issues because we know you're trying to maintain the integrity of your Invalid Activity Detection System in attempts to prevent people from circumventing the system. What we don't understand is why you've left us seemingly in the dark. We don't understand why, without notice, you would twist the spigot and shut off Ad placement even on legitimate, organic views and diminish a Creator's total revenue by 80% with no clear answers as to how long Creators will have to survive on a fraction of our typical earnings. Links to your support pages that don't give us any real answers to our questions are not enough. We are real people, with real families, real employees, real mortgages and real financial commitments. We are Creators with communities we've worked hard to build on YouTube in order to provide the very revenue that sustains these things. Communities who spend time on the YouTube platform, enjoying our content & engaging with your advertisers. We are the very people who have made YouTube the success that it is right alongside you. We are, by your own word choice, your YouTube Partners and we are in crisis. Imagine you, @YouTube, suddenly finding that 80% of your entire platform revenue was instantly & indefinitely removed with no clear answers as to how and when it would ever come back, if at all. Wouldn't that put you into crisis mode as well...? We have been as patient as possible up to this point but this issue dates back years for Creators we all know personally, and from our standpoint, it only seems to be escalating. Suddenly, we see many more Creators who've had access to their AdSense accounts suspended (and subsequently YPP monetization removed entirely) through no fault of their own. There is a simple answer here. We need transparency. We want to know what the endgame is. We want to know that there are changes currently being made that will put an end to this plight for well-intentioned Creators who have been hit with Invalid Traffic notifications due to external forces and no misdeeds of their own. We want to know that strategies, tools and support are being built to protect your YouTube partners as well as your advertisers. We want to know what those changes might be and when they will take effect. We want to know that you're developing a well-trained support team specifically to help Creators who've had their AdSense accounts and monetization suspended or impacted. It only works when we're all in this together. We await your reply.  With heartfelt respect, -Your YouTube Partners ☮️

@robertoblake Good luck Roberto! What about a tool for collaboration? That allows channels of similar niches / similar sub counts, that helps them locate them and reach out to them to collaborate on videos? Maybe using data from “subscribers most recently viewed” or something.

Those dealing with invalid traffic, Colin and Samir will be having a sit town next week with the YouTube CEO. This is your chance to have a strong voice in the community ask a hard question. You just need to tell them it’s what you want to hear in the tweet below.

Those following my journey with YouTube invalid traffic since Nov. 2022 CPM & RPM rates came back in March 2023. Then plummeted again Aug 14th. I also disabled non-linked accounts from running ads. Yet still got YouTube ad traffic. Can’t make this stuff up🤷‍♂️ #invalidtraffic

@StockStreetBlog I got hit July 3rd and then I noticed another RPM drop right around the middle of August. YouTube either made their system more sensitive to invalid traffic in the middle of August or they got worse at detecting it based on the amount of channels impacted since then.

@ErikkSwanson Ya exactly. Very strange. I read Roberto Blake’s tweet that it could be a potential culprit.

@StockStreetBlog I have been seeing the YouTube Advertising traffic source lately too. Those views disappear from my analytics after a few days which is suspicious. I also disabled non linked accounts and still seeing this traffic. Can't get an answer from anyone

@jordanliles You are spitting truth here @jordanliles ! For now I just hope it normalizes by end of month. Then I want answers so we can all be reassured it won’t happen again or at least that we can actually do something to prevent it.

I have heard of several YouTube users who also were hit with the "invalid traffic" nonsense specifically in mid-August. That includes my own channel. And of course, other users have been dealing with this for far longer. But what happened in mid-August to cause this? Besides the downturn in our metrics, the most disappointing part of all of this is that YouTube has had at least weeks since mid-August to show that they as a company truly do value creators and are looking for a resolution for this. Instead, from what I can see as someone in the public and not inside the company, they're kind of shrugging as if they don't care. Where's the official press release or announcement acknowledging that innocent creators are being impacted through no fault of their own, with a paragraph that says they're planning on reaching a solution for this? Where is that? YouTube has tons of wonderful employees. But why aren't those employees being given the freedom to communicate with creators about what's happening? Why is the company pulling back the reins? This is really unacceptable for the hard-working creators whose thousands upon thousands of hours of work on their channels is seemingly going down the drain.
