as far as structural outages go, this FB thing is relatively minor. a few hundreds of millions of dollars lost at most. if a similar outage hit AWS, cloudflare, akamai, etc, no one's credit card would work. i expect the losses would be in the billions if not trillions.

@jvitak @kingjen SMS 2fa is bad, but removing SMS 2fa without forcing those users to switch to (say) TOTP is extremely irresponsible.

@jvitak @kingjen the supposed reason is that tier-2 telcos were doing early termination scams to bill twitter. removing SMS saves money at the expense of user safety.
