On Yom HaShoah, we pause to remember the six million Jewish victims of the Nazis' systematic program of mass murder, along with the millions of others murdered by the Hitler regime. We remember the scale of this horror, and the systems of hatred and dehumanization that made it possible — and that still echo in our world today. In New York City, home to more Holocaust survivors than anywhere else in this country, that memory lives among us and shapes who we are. The resilience of survivors is woven into the very fabric of this city, and it calls on all of us to act with courage and clarity in the face of injustice. Today, as antisemitism rises once more, we are reminded that remembrance alone is not enough. We must confront hate wherever it appears. As we light the yahrzeit candle, let us come together to protect its fragile flame — and shield it from the cold winds of hate and cruelty. "Never again" is a promise. And it is one we must fight to keep.

The U.S. must immediately make clear to Israel that the ceasefire agreement is not and cannot be functional without a ceasefire in Lebanon. The American people want this war to end and bombing downtown Beirut is not a path to peace.

@EmmanuelMacron The problem with your thought process is that unlike France, Israel has learned that immediate surrender to hostile forces launching rockets into a country daily does not improve the situation. Lebanon has no ability or desire to disarm Hezbollah. Israel must.

I have just spoken with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam. I expressed France’s full solidarity in the face of the indiscriminate strikes carried out by Israel in Lebanon today, which resulted in a very high number of civilian casualties. We condemn these strikes in the strongest possible terms. They pose a direct threat to the sustainability of the ceasefire that has just been reached. Lebanon must be fully covered by it. I reiterated the need to preserve Lebanon’s territorial integrity and France’s determination to support the efforts of the Lebanese authorities to uphold the country’s sovereignty and implement the Hezbollah disarmament plan.

Confession from a former hard-left secular Jew. For most of my life I believed something many secular Jews still believe. That Judaism is basically: Bagels Comedy A few holidays And voting Democrat. Then October 7 happened. And suddenly I learned something our ancestors never forgot. Judaism isn’t just a culture. It’s a people. With memory. With enemies. With 3,000 years of survival instincts. And here’s the uncomfortable truth. When Torah disappears, something else fills the space. For many secular Jews, that something became progressive politics. Not Jewish values. Not Jewish law. Not Jewish memory. Just the latest ideology wearing the costume of morality. When you understand what Judaism actually is, your politics change very quickly. Some Jews learn this from Torah.
