Today we announced that we secured a license from the US government to offer GitHub to developers in Iran. We want developers to be able to collaborate on GitHub no matter where they live, and we're working to secure similar licenses for Crimea and Syria. github.blog/2021-01-05-adv…

@github 1/ Crimea is a part of Ukraine annexed by Russia at gunpoint in violation of Ukrainian and international law, and is recognized as such by the US Government. For this reason, Crimean entities are under US sanctions.

@github Crimea, the region of Ukraine, is occupied by Russia since 2014, and any international business there is restricted by UN sanctions. So are you going to break those sanctions and recognise the aggression?

@github your hypothetical loicense for Crimea doesn't make any sense from the standpoint of applicable international law and practice your smm person should consult adults before posting such rubbish

@github Thank you GitHub! Back in 2019 when my account got "restricted" I had to create a new account for work and be careful to use it with a proxy. Ever since I've been living in fear of leaking my IP address.

@github With its statements, GitHub supports terrorists and invaders. Crimea is a Ukrainian territory occupied by Russia. Shame on GitHub.

@github There's an obvious difference between "developers freedom" and "supporting terrorism".

@github I remember when @aliostad first raised the alarm about the repositories in limbo over the pullout years ago! Hope that never happens again

@github 2/2: Other websites only show us a vague 403 page and nothing else. Google is the most shameless example preventing Iranians from accessing any Google Sites hosted website and many of its services with a deliberately disrespectful 403 page claiming they don't know what happened.

@github 1/2: Thank you GitHub. This shows how much you actually respect developers around the world and particularly Iranian users. As an Iranian, GitHub is the only service I've used that has given me a respectful access-denied page explaining why I can't access certain services.
