15 years in game dev. I know why they made that decision. It's worse than you think.

Fifteen years inside the greed machine. Watched good games get gutted by bad decisions, watched executives try to smuggle in a "live service" like it was an original idea, but really just a money grab. Watched studios burn through goodwill they spent a decade building. Not bitter about the games. Bitter about what happens to them once the suits take control.

MMO players, quick question. If there was a game that had: • World of Warcraft style MMO world • New World style gathering and large siege battles • Path of Exile style monetization (free base game + cosmetic shop) Would you try it? Because that game already exists.. It’s Guild Wars 2! Free to play. No subscription. And it’s on Steam. It also does something most MMOs don't. It respects your time. You can quit for 5 years, come back, and your gear is still usable. You literally can pick up where you left off. AND ITS FREE TO PLAY 🤯 No expansion gear treadmill. The world itself is huge, dare i say MASSIVE too. Mountains, caves, hidden jumping puzzles, deep/vast explorable underwater zones and cities. Instead of quest hubs, the maps run events where dozens of players suddenly end up defending towns or fighting massive bosses together. Pvp has matchmaking as well as "world vs world", which is basically a huge battlefield warfare with siege weapons and armies fighting over castles. Also.. the mount system might be the best in any MMO. Each mount has unique movement mechanics, not just speed boosts. And the community is known for being one of the friendliest in the genre. I could go on and on. I keep getting asked in stream about this game and I always have to stop and share my passion and love for everything this game has to offer. If you like MMORPGs and somehow missed this one, I highly recommend checking it out. GW2 players, help spread the word! #GuildWars2 @GuildWars2 @ArenaNet

@vasuman This is every AAA studio in one post. The thing that works gets reassigned. The thing nobody asked for gets resourced. Multiply by every team, every quarter, every exec who needed a roadmap item.

As someone who worked at Reality Labs: the Metaverse had real legs but was obliterated by middle management completely out of touch with how young people actually use technology. I built a V1 tool that game developers genuinely needed, and the moment it was done, it got shipped to a team in London (to die), and I was reassigned to a "higher-priority project" that zero developers asked for. Multiply that by every team, and you'll understand why this never took off yet cost 80 billion.
Polymarket@Polymarket

JUST IN: Meta announces they'll be shutting down the Metaverse, after pouring $80,000,000,000.00 into the project.

Started off as something I needed and couldn’t find a reasonably priced solution, so I built it for myself. Only later did I realize that others might have the same pain point and would appreciate the tool. Fault testing and packaging a personal tool is certainly a challenge though.

The massive influx of "retro" games with awful graphics and interfaces that we have been subjected to on Steam over the past 10 years is only going to get worse with the new AI slop tools, unfortunately.

One thing that bugs me in RPGs is how people make things too goofy, almost like slapstick cartoon bullshit. I like serious games with serious characters, maybe once in a blue moon something funny, but not like a 10-year-old and friends just found the game and are playing.

Valve claims they don't cooperate with gambling sites, yet their loot box mechanics blurthe line between gaming and gambling. They are terrified of the lawsuit's financial implications. Self-preservation speaks loudly here. rockpapershotgun.com/valve-does-not…

Guys, things have changed. There used to be so much woke stuff in games to talk about and push back on. But there is so much less now. Even at GDC it was muted. You all made a difference. Keep it that way.

@TheDirtBagFace For real. I’ll be spending more money with them now that I’m back. Second time Blizzards game and the mmo scene in general pushed me back to guild wars cause it’s just THAT mmo. Ashes of Creation looked pretty cool but GW2 is underrated 100% and AoC failed for a reason so

@openart_ai If the navigation actually holds up and isn't just a demo room with two angles, this is genuinely useful for anyone building mood boards or fan content. The 'production-ready' claim is the part worth watching.

Today, we’re launching a new way to create with AI. With OpenArt Worlds, you can generate a fully navigable 3D environment from a single prompt or image, step inside it, and capture shots exactly the way you envision them. No more starting over. No more inconsistent scenes. You build the world once - and create inside it. • Move through your scene freely • Find your angles • Add characters and elements • Capture production-ready shots

@pcgamer "I know a lot of it is from fear" is the most honest thing a live service director has said in years. Fear of player backlash, fear of engagement drop, fear of the forum posts. The numbers are meaningless and everyone knows it. At least he said it out loud.

This is the Crimson Desert map (nearly all of it lol) Blue - Areas I've done 90+% of quests in Orange - Areas I've started quests in Red - Areas I've yet to explore This is after 205 hours. Crimson Desert is one of the biggest games ever made, if not the biggest.

@jogamedev Pretty accurate analysis. I would add some other costs: development software and other licenses, web infrastructure (if you host live services/community portals), along with legal and accounting costs.

Here's an example of how much money a game dev actually pockets after earning $100,000 of Gross Revenue on Steam: - ~18% (returns, chargebacks, taxes) = $82,000 - 30% (Steam's platform cut) = $57,400 - 0% (if you self-publish) - 15.3% (U.S. Self Employment Tax) = $48,617 - $4,377 (Federal income tax) = $44,270 - ~$0-$3,800 (State income tax) = ~$40,400 So you could pocket about $40,000, but don't be discouraged. $100k gross sounds like a lot but it's only 5,000 copies sold at $20. This is attainable, but it's also why it's important to keep your development timeline short. x.com/jogamedev/stat… Disclaimer: This is a rough simplified example for a US solo dev self-publishing as a sole proprietor with minimal other expenses. Actual results vary a lot by your location, business structure, deductions, filing status, etc. This is not tax or financial advice — talk to a CPA.

Crimson Desert has no storage chests. In a 100+ hour open world loot game. If it doesn't fit in your pack, SOL. They doubled inventory space mid-review because of feedback and it still doesn't feel like enough. Someone greenlit that. Someone signed off on shipping a game where keeping cool gear is simply not an option. That decision didn't happen by accident...
