Perhaps I am missing the context of this entire conversation, but this is such a bizarre take. You can have a deep belief about many things, including murder and torture, which is the belief of the Iranian regime. Having a deeply held belief does not equate to moral superiority, nor does it automatically warrant emphatic posturing. The strength of one’s convictions doesn’t validate it.

The founders were very wise to place the decision to go to war in the hands of the legislative branch, and the moral duty of a leader to be cautious and consult widely before making such a decision is a theme that became standard in Catholic just war tradition. Stubborn, blind partisanship and ideology have led too many conservatives and Catholics to ignore this wisdom, and foolishly to treat the law and moral principle as annoying constraints to work around, rather than essential guardrails to stay within lest the passions that surround war overwhelm reason.
