@MitraHispana @RadioFreeTom @RpsAgainstTrump It's been a while since I read Tocqueville and I don't think I've ever read Putnam (mentally putting it on my list). I agree. But I think the internet has amplified isolation exponentially.

@TemporalStrife @RadioFreeTom @RpsAgainstTrump It’s not new! Have you read Putnam’s “Bowling Alone”? Or “Denocracy in America” by Alexis de Tocqueville. In the U.S. we are workaholics who define ourselves by money. We also have modern technology like social media which lets us “socialize” without seeing people in person

@MackinacCenter Yes, but it's stupid. It'll literally make you intellectually inept to refuse to engage in discourse with those you disagree.

@MitraHispana @RadioFreeTom @RpsAgainstTrump "Lack community"? I think that is a major problem for sure. Why do you think that is? What has become of our culture that we have become so individually isolated?

Just recently, I saw a fairly prominent protestant account claim that it is important to point out that Catholics are "wrong" because they are "wrong". And it struck me as very telling - his motivation wasn't love, it was the need to be "right". If you believed someone was living in a way that is counter to salvation, you would think that your motivation in pointing out "errors" would be one based in love and not in being "right".

Why do some protestants who go after Catholics, especially ex Catholics, come across as angry and filled with venom. I hardly ever see a love for Christ reflected in how they engage with us. Same for those who feel the chair is empty.

@MitraHispana @RadioFreeTom @RpsAgainstTrump I'll take it a step further and ask what is fundamentally wrong with our society that so-called "propaganda" (I'm not convinced all of it is) is much more believable than the so-called "truth". Or, rather, why is the truth so difficult to detect or comprehend?

I think you might find, regardless of what faith you pursue, that there will be inevitable differences between your beliefs and that of the particular faith "system" you look into. I think this is a primary reason Catholics are asked to align their intellect and will with that of the Church. Personally, there are some things about the Catholic Faith I really struggle to embrace, but I have come to the conclusion that my will should be secondary to that of Jesus' will and I ask Him to help me to continue to convert my heart to that of the Church, so as to be part of His people.

As I expected, the parish priest and sponsor are no longer willing to work with me to bring me into the Catholic Church. That’s fine. I hold too many views contrary to Church teachings anyway, so it wouldn’t really make sense for me to be Catholic.

@LizzieMarbach It's almost like one should embrace the body God gave them as a gift and accept living as God intended.

@CharlesTingler Unfortunately, the internet breeds a certain antithesis to intellectual discourse and promotes a superficial fan-club of snipes and snark.

A lot of people want me silenced or canceled. Not because I’m wrong. Not because they can refute what I say. Because of my past. They go straight to it. Labels. Records. History. They think that ends the conversation. It doesn’t. That is ad hominem. Attacking the person because they can’t deal with the argument. If what I’m saying is false, prove it false. Break it down. Show the error. That is how truth gets handled. What I get instead is deflection. People pointing at where I’ve been instead of dealing with what I’m saying right now. My past is real. I don’t hide it. It’s part of my record. It does not invalidate truth. Truth does not depend on the speaker’s background. If it did, nobody would be allowed to speak. What this really shows is fear. People are comfortable with narratives that protect them. When someone steps outside that and says what others avoid, the response is not correction. It is suppression. Canceling someone is easier than engaging them. Silencing someone is easier than proving them wrong. That’s what this is. I’m still here. I’m still speaking. If you disagree, deal with the argument. Not me.

@PrayTheRosary Yeah, I idly voice political opinions, but don't really engage much anymore. I find it pulls me away from my faith and I'd much rather just keep things to myself and let Jesus work it out however He sees fit.

Don't obsess over politics. Focus on prayer and staying out of sin. This will matter much more in your last moments.
