Catastrophic insurance is actually what “insurance” is supposed to mean. Routine costs (doc visits, occasional urgent care, prescriptions, the sort of stuff that people predictably use) were paid in cash - and were cheaper because of it. INSURANCE was supposed to be for unpredictable costs, like getting cancer or hit by a bus. And catastrophic insurance was fantastic for that purpose without breaking the bank. “Insurance” for predictable, routine costs that most people incur is just called “paying overhead on top of expenses,” which is why most people carry accident insurance but not maintenance insurance on their cars. It wasn’t consumers who were stupid.

@CollinRugg I would say that, reading the judge's response, she may have seen a previous criminal record that validated her concerns. We need to stop allowing "youths" off easy if they have a rap sheet a mile long.

NEW: Family of a Texas teen loses it as judge sentences him to 25 years in prison for robbing a convenience store. Judge Raquel West was seen torching 18-year-old Caden James Fontenette before handing out the sentence. "There was a time some years ago that there really wasn't even a question... State's attorneys were recommending youthful offenders probation. Let's give everybody an opportunity..." West said. "You don't have a good likelihood of being successful if I were to put you on probation... I'm going to sentence you to a term of 25 years." Fontenette pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery for a 2025 incident where he and two others robbed a convenience store at gunpoint. The suspects were caught on camera assaulting the store clerk. Fontenette will likely be in his 40s when he is released from prison.

I once had to reassure a (very broke) man that I adored that a £50 ring was absolutely fine and that I wanted to marry him more than I wanted an expensive ring. @ggetzie @uncledoomer They are talking about a tri-level or quad-level. Main floor has like 5-6 steps up to bedrooms and bath, and also 5-6 steps down to family room/den/laundry, and kitchen/dining/living on main floor.

I don’t know what kind of split-level this person is talking about but I have never seen one with “bedrooms upstairs and away from living and dining” Split level means there are stairs when you walk in the front door. Go up to the main level and there’s living / dining and bedrooms. Down is a rec room, maybe a spare bedroom, and the garage.

the problem is not that millenials dont want these sensible starter homes. its that baby boomers expect to be paid mcmansion prices for their sensible starter home that hasnt been updated since the 70s

@uncledoomer Instead, for about 50K more, we are building a brand-new house on 8+ acres with a new garage (their garage needed to be razed and rebuilt). We can afford it, we're professionals in our early 50s, but it is our first home after saving for 20 years.

@uncledoomer Electric heat in the ceiling (no furnace), paneling in a couple rooms, when it was cool, the wall heater made the windows condensate like a greenhouse and created mold. 5 acres, we seriously considered it.

BREAKING: DOJ has charged a Virginia man with illegally selling the gun used by ODU terrorist Mohamed Jalloh. According to the federal complaint, Kenya Chapman sold a .22 caliber Glock 44 pistol to Jalloh for $100 this week. He admitted he first stole it from a vehicle in Newport News, VA a year ago. Additionally, DOJ says Chapman was the subject of an ATF investigation in 2021 after he straw purchased three firearms that were later recovered from crime scenes, including a homicide. Chapman admitted to the illegal straw purchases (when you buy a gun and falsely claim its for yourself when you intend to sell it or give it to someone else), but the Biden DOJ declined to prosecute him. Instead, Chapman was given a warning, and he signed an apology letter. According to the federal complaint, Jalloh, who was convicted of providing support to ISIS and had been released from prison early after just 7 years, was visited at his Virginia home by his US probation officer every 6 months. The probation officer's last visit to Jalloh's home in Sterling, VA, was November 17th, 2025. Additionally, according to the federal complaint, the evening before Jalloh carried out the terrorist attack at ODU, his phone was tracked in the vicinity of the Islamic Center of Hampton, VA.
