@MattMahanSJ I volunteer in several homeless encampments twice a week in the South Bay and can confirm what @MattMahanSJ is saying. Most of the people I see are either alcoholics, drug addicts or have severe mental problems. We have to break the cycle they are in.

Leaving people to live and die on our streets is immoral, ineffective and stupid. When we have safe, dignified, private taxpayer-funded alternatives, we are doing everyone a disservice — the housed and homeless — if we refuse to interrupt cycles of addiction, mental illness and violence. Doing nothing isn’t compassionate. Doing nothing isn’t progressive. Doing nothing will only make this problem worst. @alex_lee, you know that the longer we leave people to suffer on our streets, the harder it is to help them. The worse their health conditions get. The more likely they are to develop an addiction. The less they are able to make rational decisions about their own wellbeing. If we only help the people who are ready to accept help, we are leaving the most vulnerable among us to worsen and so often die on our streets. And we are showing our residents, our kids and the rest of the country that we are OK with sprawling tent encampments, unchecked and public drug use, and dirty streets. I don’t think your constituents are ok with that, Alex, and you shouldn’t be either. Let’s do better.
