Do you pay for the bus in King County? King County Metro numbers are in from the first 10 months of fare enforcement. Enforcement officers only issued eight citations in those 10 months. They did, however, issue 2,000 warnings to people caught not paying for transit.

Peak Seattle: 2200 warnings, but only 8 citations issued between May and December 2025, all of them voided (even if they hadn't been, the fine is only $20 if paid within 30 days, but that's all really theoretical since no one is actually getting fined). Fare evasion is at 35 percent, down only one percent from the same period a year previously, before enforcement efforts restarted. Fare box recovery of operating costs has plunged by nearly two-thirds since 2019 (from 24 percent of total costs recovered to only nine percent). The fare enforcement team that ended up issuing zero citations will cost Metro $3.1M this year. A Metro spokesperson correctly points out they are implementing the fare enforcement system as it was designed by the King County Council, which apparently continues to believe that any actual enforcement against rampant fare evasion would be inequitable.

The Seattle City Council unanimously passed two ordinances tied to Mayor Katie Wilson’s plan to expand shelter capacity and speed up the city’s response to homelessness. Wilson's plan aims to add 500 new micro-shelters, known as tiny homes, in the city before June. The council approved her request for $ 5 million in funding and expanded authority to increase the number of tiny homes in existing villages. Wilson is facing pressure to get a handle on growing homeless encampments across the city. Councilmember Dan Strauss noted significant encampments that have been established on sidewalks in Ballard, including a camp profiled by KOMO News last week where a couple built a structure with a chimney. And yet, in August, Northwest Natural Gas wants to increase gas rates by 19% for 90,000 Washingtonians in the Vancouver area. This increase is not fair, just, or reasonable, and we’re fighting back.
