Congregationalism and Episcopalianism didn't "disappear" though and grew in absolute numbers until the mid 20th Century-they just grew more slowly than Methodists etc due to the latter adapting to frontier expansion better.

American religion changed dramatically in its first 75 years. Episcopalians and Congregationalists largely disappeared. Catholics rose by 7x. Methodists went from being a rounding error to the largest Christian group.

@historiclassics It’s not the 14th state if it never was recognized by the federal government

In 1785, frontiersmen (in what’s now Tennessee) declared the independent State of Franklin after North Carolina tried to abandon them. It eventually collapsed in 1789, but was the 14th state for a good 4 years.

The Glorious Revolution of 1688 really wasn't that "glorious". Parliament deposed King James II, invited William of Orange to be a figurehead, and passed the Bill of Rights. This is regarded as the moment when divine right died and constitutional monarchy was born

@maggiemphillips Unitarians cannot be WASPs since they’re not Protestant also most mainline Protestant groups are about even in partisanship also the SBC is majority WASP

@LinkofSunshine I mean American elections have never been particularly huge landslides, Nixon was the last person to get more than 60% of the popular vote and the post era of good feelings record is 61% by Lyndon

Why is American politics so insanely optimized? We’ve had like 3 elections in a row (and 5/7) literally within 2% Basically every other country in the world has regular blowouts

@NathanBozeman2 I’m not saying you have to, as a Christian, have my exact interpretation, I’m just saying you have to assent in some form to it being true. There are multiple interpretations where the interpreter believes Genesis to be 100% accurate

@PredisioJAdams I don't think that's right, unless you assume that "true" can only mean "interpreting this the way I do." There are other ways of interpreting Genesis. The question is: Which one is correct?

Fundamentalists who make your view of the earth "a Gospel issue" are a major reason many people leave the faith. Your view of creation has implications for how you understand the Gospel, but it is not a rejection of the Gospel to hold to an old earth. And it's dumb to say it is.

@Empty_America I guess it would also include Calvinism and Methodism (Lutherans probably only satisfy W and P), which are still recognizable but not as aesthetically pleasing as Episcopals

The other thing to understand is that the "P" in WASP didn't mean what you might think. They had zero cultural relationship with anything like modern evangelicalism, southern Baptists, etc. Especially in NYC, many were attending very high Episcopal Churches, like this:
