We continue to receive complaints regarding certain cities not being utilized on our forecast maps. To blanket cover these complaints, all forecasts going forward will include all Michigan cities. Thank you for your understanding. Humor aside, it is extremely important that you learn your location on a map of Michigan, as well as the county you reside in. When we live stream, we are often naming counties and cities of impact, but knowing where you live on a map of Michigan can further assist you in determining if a storm is headed your way or is on the opposite side of the state. We encourage you to learn! The easiest way to find out where you live on a map is by opening the “maps” app that comes by default on your smartphone, or by downloading Google Maps on the app store or play store. There should be an arrow or compass button within your map app that you can click which will then pop up a blue dot. This blue dot is your location. Now, zoom out. Michigan is shaped like your right hand, so where are you on the shape of your hand? Memorize that place. Lastly, find big cities and population centers close to you. We use major cities on our forecast graphics. So figuring out that you live close to Lansing, or Grand Rapids, or Flint will help you locate yourself better. Once you figure out where you live, you can also Google what county your town/city/township is in. Knowing the name of your county is also a beneficial tool when it comes to weather information.

@BluekandyWX No matter how many times you say to not drive through a flooded roadway, incompetency will always strike. There's no right or wrong answer here. We do what we can to warn and educate, but it's up to them to choose the best option for survival.

I'll start a discussion on this, and I invite your thoughts! I think YouTubers should never tell someone explicitly to "drive away" from a tornado because we cannot assume that everyone is A) watching live and not delayed, and B) cognizant of what *we* know about the storm.

@BluekandyWX I think Max is fine for this. We can only make so many attempts to save incompetency. If you live in this part of the country, you should take the time to learn where you are on the map.

I’m glad to see Vince talking about this. I’ve been frustrated about the Durant radar situation for a long time. There was talks of RadarScope getting access to their data when it first became operational…and clearly that never happened. This is one of the worst radar holes in the country, I wish they’d at the VERY least improve the crappy app. If not, why isn’t a way to pay for access to this data unavailable? We all need to contact the city of Durant and make some noise about it tbh.

Alright for the people who can’t comprehend, yes it is available in the free app. OBVIOUSLY as I just SHOWED you. I have submitted 3 requests to the City for a data pipe. They denied all 3. I meet all requirements. I’ve inquired about PAYING for it. If this is truly tax funded there should be a way in. The free app they provide is not useful in any way shape or form. And for god sakes the scrubber handle is a freaking cloud.

@therobdale @VinceWaelti A direct link to Norman is still around $30k a month, no? But the data itself has been available far longer than 2010. Also, yes, "Development" of the "88D" was ongoing in 1988. What a coincidence it wasn't fully operational until 1990 as I said.

@TennTrackWX @VinceWaelti Do you know what the 88 means in WSR88D? Look up InterRAD - one of the first display programs for NEXRAD. Guess who wrote it? And then ask questions about the NIDS dissemination system that required a dedicated T1 line to DC in order to get the data.

This Durant radar app SUCKS. It’s the cookie cutter Baron piece of crap. Is there any way to get these people to give us web socket or even a bucket to pull data from? Did tax payers fund this or did Baron? If tax payers did there may be some legal route to go here. This should not be the only method to access.

@therobdale @VinceWaelti I'm aware of the technology and history of the system and data structure. I'm familiar with both AWIPS and the supporting infrastructure, EDEX, of which I have ran my own to locally fetch and digest model data hosted by your partner Unidata.

@therobdale @VinceWaelti You are also stating that nws radar data fed from the WSR-88D wouldn't have been made available until 2010, as it was first deployed in Norman Oklahoma in the year 1990. You are clearly a clown or have no knowledge of the subject. Have a good day.

@TennTrackWX @VinceWaelti There is no such requirement. It actually wasn’t free for the first 20 years. But NWS received extra money to support public dissemination from Congress. You don’t get to fly or even touch a F16 fighter plane. You benefit from it though just as you benefit from their radar.

@therobdale @VinceWaelti The availability of weather data fed to or from an originating government entity has no association with the department of defense or fighter jets, or is subject to information classification or redactions.

@therobdale @VinceWaelti The same provisions that make WSR-88D data available to the public would apply to the Durant radar if truly taxpayer funded.

@TennTrackWX @VinceWaelti Oh it will be expensive of course. Radars aren’t cheap :) But I’m fairly certain they’d be willing to sell the data. Let me know how it goes with the legal route - I’m curious what law requires them to give Vince a free tap.

@VinceWaelti Taxpayers did fund it which is why they provide the data free to the public and to the NWS. Those interested in a feed are free to arrange that with Baron.

@VinceWaelti It was reported 3 years ago (from what I remember) that it was entirely funded by the City of Durant. Baron simply fulfilled the order. The Tampa WFLA Max Defender app is completely identical and equally as garbage.
