I'm very worried for the degrading level of HN comments due to mass-arrival of users over the years. Soon or later, there is something to do about it. The problem with HN is that it does not mimic in any way the social dynamics that determine that you need to earn ability to comment / talk. Voting comments does not work since the voters themselves have quality issues.

It seems like the state of native AOT compilation is: * Frontends supported by major C compilers * Various compilers that wrap LLVM * golang ... is that really it? Does anyone else generate their own native code? Where are the indy mach-o/pe/elf generators? Anywhere?

@nateberkopec Lobster is exactly like Bluesky, once you dont like certain views on certain platform and decided start your own, you will only get concentrated opinion, most likely rant in one place.

It's extremely funny to me that Lobste.rs just can't stop talking about LLMs and vibecoding. Every day you can just watch the existential angst and turmoil. HN frontpage: 3/30 articles rn about vibecoding. Mostly technical articles. Lobsters: 5/25, mostly rants.

After hearing feedback from Canadian founders in our network, we’ve decided to add Canada back to our list of accepted countries of incorporation. Going forward, YC will once again invest in US, Canada, Cayman, and Singapore corporations. ycombinator.com/blog/adding-ca…

@EngagingData @BrilliantMaps Hi I know this may be a long shot, do you have a version where it show only the Red part and they are all stick together? As in Real Size of World in Traditional Map ( Mercator ) representation. Been looking for one and it seems no where to be found.

@antirez macOS OOM has been an issue for at least 15 if not 20 years already. And as far as I am aware nothing much has been done about it. Same with Safari.

Second time my MacOS crashes because of a combination of Ghostty memory leaks + MacOs kernel terrible handling of OOM conditions.

@Love2Code Scaling DC takes years, Even if 100x more efficient is possible today, they will just push it to do more / different things. ( And I am thinking a few hundred times wouldn't even be enough as we hit law of deminishing returns.... )

What bothers me about the rush to scale datacenters to gigawatts is that current AI tech seems extremely inefficient wrt data/energy/compute. Might be spending huge resources to scale up models that will quickly be outdated, when something 10 to 100x more efficient is possible.

@build__fast @dhh It isn't just open source, it is about zero lock in. Having the option to take my data and host it myself instead of being held hostage. A lot of so call open source SaaS doesn't even allow that.

Any definition of open source that doesn't include this flow is broken. I've used many a SaaS that I wish was this open source, so I could just fix my own annoyances on the spot and submit a PR!

While migrating from GitHub Issues to @37signals Fizzy, I noticed it wasn't possible to import old items with the original timestamps. Since it's open source, I was able to make a pull request, which just got merged! From problem to solution in a couple of hours. 🚀

@sansvalt That’s just if he wants to get them their for free isn’t it? You can buy paddock passes which aren’t cheap but if Oscar really makes $10-$15 million before bonus’s and endorsements he can afford it.

@asymco According to Forbes there are 3000 billionaires around the world, and looking at that list I am pretty sure they are at least 2x or 3x off real figures. ( during peak 2021 before Properties asset collapse ) A lot of those are old money owning real estate assets.

Horace Dediu@asymco·
2,900 billionaires now control $15.8 trillion, up from about 2,700 billionaires with a cumulative wealth of nearly $14 trillion a year earlier. The number and wealth of billionaires as a whole were boosted by the second-highest number of new billionaires minted in a year—287—since UBS began tracking that figure in 2015. Consistent with my estimates.

Biggest takeaway from KubeCon: People want Neki badly. We're building the solution for scaling and managing huge Postgres databases. More to come, but in the meantime: neki.dev

@BenjDicken r6id= 3rd Generation Intel Xeon = IceLake-SP ( 2021 ) on Intel 10nm / Intel 7, i7i = 5th Gen Intel Xeon = Emerald Rapids / Raptor Lake ( 2023 ) on Intel 7. When Zen 6 comes I wouldn't be surprised if we could get the same jump.

Not all CPUs are created equal. This latency graph shows a r6id → i7i upgrade. Same vCPU count. Same amount of RAM. Both using local SSDs. Upgrading to a newer instance makes a big difference.

@manchatz @dhh In that case the Benchmark is showing exactly what it should be testing; CPU performance. The disc / OS performance is not part of that equation.

Ofc, but looking solely at raw Geekbench benchmarks, it can be very misleading. I fell for it after years using Linux, I bought my first Mac this year blinded by that (and the Mac-hype in X). Its a great laptop, ngl, but for dev I still prefer my Linux laptop for exactly the reasons you mentioned.

Geekbench results can be pretty deceiving. They make Apple's M-series chips look far more powerful than they really are in real-world use, so much that even the affordable AMD 8745H can match the M4 Max, as other variables are also relevant (bus bandwidth, memory speed, disk speed, etc). Check ⬇️

@privatetalky And the whole "but- but I can't charge while listening to music!" argument is so irrelevant, just use MagSafe i17 MagSafe - 25W i16PM Wired - 27W Seriously, if MagSafe can nearly match wired from last gen, there's no more compromise.
