@NalinisKitchen Look on the bright side the question you raised is being discussed in Parliament. You played your part by asking the question I hope others will join in as well someday.

@foodpharmer2 There has been several recall related to Nestle infant formula in recent months. Can you imagine how would have impact this India cause we don’t have that rigorous recall system compared western countries.

Bollywood celebrities do not promote baby food products! In fact, all baby food product ads are banned in India since 1990s. But do you know the man behind it? Meet Dr. Arun, Nestle’s biggest enemy! Dr. Arun started his fight with Nestle in 1980s. He noticed that Nestle’s sales agents dressed up as nurses and went to hospitals to convince mothers to stop breastfeeding and give formula to babiesinstead. The sales agents would also give free baby formula samples to mothers. Mothers would get overdependent on formula, and their breast milk would dry up. As a result, they would have no choice but to give their babies formula. Dr. Arun and his team fought aggressively, and got the Milk Substitutes Act passed in 1992 which banned all forms of baby food ads! Breastfeeding has numerous benefits including reducing the risk of obesity and diabetes, and the entire country should thank Dr. Arun for his role in fighting against baby formula!

NPD teams are always hunting for the next big thing. Clean label. Functional. Interesting enough to justify the brief. Pink guava ticks every box, and nobody's really using it yet. Think about what it actually brings to a formulation. Naturally high in Vitamin C. Vibrant pink colour with no artificial colouring needed. A sweet, tropical depth that works in ways mango and passion fruit simply can't. And stable enough to process into pulp, purée, IQF, or frozen pieces without losing what makes it special. It works in smoothies and functional drinks. Yoghurts and desserts. Bakery fillings and glazes. Even confectionery and sauces. The consumer demand for tropical and exotic is growing. The regulatory profile is clean. The supply chain, when done properly, is solid. If you're in NPD and searching for your next standout ingredient, I'd genuinely love to share more. Pink guava is ready for UK shelves. #FoodInnovation #NPD #ExoticIngredients #PinkGuava #FoodManufacturing

Food safety is not just a regulatory requirement it directly impacts global trust in sourcing. In markets like India, where there is immense potential in agriculture and food processing, one key challenge often discussed is consistency in enforcement and quality standards. From an export and compliance perspective, this becomes critical: Buyers rely heavily on country-of-origin perception Any gap in quality or control can impact supplier credibility globally Strong systems, transparency, and accountability are essential to build trust As someone working in quality and exploring sourcing opportunities, I strongly believe: ✔ Clear standards must be backed by robust enforcement ✔ Supplier verification and testing should be consistent and transparent ✔ Building trust requires alignment between regulators, manufacturers, and exporters India has huge potential to lead in global food supply but consistency in quality and compliance will be the key driver. Would be interested to hear how others in export, compliance, and food safety see this evolving.

Hon’ble Prime Minister @narendramodi Ji, Food adulteration in India has become a serious public health threat, contributing to chronic diseases and long-term toxicity. Despite its mandate, FSSAI and state food safety departments have failed to enforce regulations effectively, with widespread concerns about corruption and weak accountability. Even the food standards set by FSSAI are so weak that the same companies and brands sell lower-quality products in India compared to Western countries. The most alarming part which I know you will not appreciate is that when concerned citizens began exposing FSSAI’s wrongdoing on social media, instead of addressing the issues, the authority reportedly responded by filing FIRs against them to silence their voices. I urge the dissolution of the current system and the creation of a transparent, strictly accountable food safety authority. Accountability must be fixed, if any citizen takes food sample and get it tested from private laboratory and food is found adulterated then concerned accountable officer must be immediately suspended Yours sincerely, Tarun Cc to @PMOIndia @JPNadda @MoHFW_INDIA

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) @khurpenchh

The SPS Agreement says every country has the right to set its own food safety standards. But here’s the catch. If your standard is stricter than the international baseline you need scientific evidence to back it up. No evidence? WTO can rule it an unfair trade barrier. So a country trying to protect its consumers from a questionable ingredient can get dragged to a trade dispute panel. Science vs sovereignty. Public health vs market access. That tension is exactly why food compliance is never just about food. It’s about who gets to decide what’s safe. And who has the power to challenge that decision.

Great point and there’s already an answer that exists. The UK traffic light system does exactly this. Red, amber, green. Front of pack. No flipping over, no decoding small print. Just a colour that tells you straight. The problem? It’s voluntary. Same brands that shout “low sugar!” go very quiet when a traffic light would show red. They opt out. Nothing happens. If you can badge low sugar, you should be just as visible when it’s high sugar. Same shelf. Same customer. Same logic.

In my blog I ask if the law clearly defines what is a “low sugar” or “zero sugar” food product, and used as a claim upfront by food product companies, why hesitate to define “high sugar” and let people know. is this fair ? Protein pani puri. Chocolate ketchup. Dal Makhani Ice-cream. Since morning I’ve been seeing a lot of brands announcing new products. All kinds of weird combinations. It’s April Fool’s, so I get it. Many of these are meant to be funny. But some of them feel very gimmicky and shallow. Social media managers are often evaluated on views, reach, engagement. Not on trust. So naturally, the incentive becomes: create something gimmicky that grabs eyeballs. Honestly, these April Fool's posts work. They get traction. But I’ve always believed in “Trust Over Traction”. So that is why in our Only What’s Needed office we have a small sign on the wall that says: “Trust over traction.” We make mistakes sometimes. We’re not perfect. But we genuinely try to stick to that principle. Because in the long run, trust compounds more than traction ever will.

April Fools angle April Fools’ Day. The one day everyone’s waiting to be tricked. So let me tell you something that sounds made up but isn’t. Pink guava has more Vitamin C than orange juice. More antioxidants than most fruits sitting in your fridge right now. It’s one of the most nutritious things you can eat. And most people in the UK have never tried it. No joke. 🍃

🌱 Hey everyone, I’m starting to explore working with co-manufacturers for pink guava products IQF, puree, pulp, cubes. Nothing fancy yet, just trying to learn what’s possible and connect with people who know the industry. The bigger idea I’m playing with is to turn this into something valuable a brand that helps manufacturers get consistent, good quality fruit ingredients without the usual hassle. Here’s a glimpse of the guava we’re exploring: [Attach images] If you have experience in co-manufacturing, fruit products, or the food industry in general, I’d love to hear your thoughts or advice. Even just pointing me to someone else to talk to would mean a lot! 🌱 #FoodIndustryIndia #FoodProcessing #CoManufacturing #FoodIngredients #Guava #MakeInIndia #StartupJourneyIndia #AgriBusinessIndia

India was told to ditch ghee and coconut oil. Switch to refined vegetable oil. Heart healthy. Modern. Better. We switched. What we weren’t told: Refined seed oils are ultra processed. They oxidise at high heat producing compounds linked to inflammation. And they’ve pushed our omega-6 to omega-3 ratio from 1:1 to as high as 50:1. The original science against saturated fat was flawed. And industry funded. Traditional fats weren’t the enemy. We just weren’t given the full picture. #SeedOils #Ghee #Nutrition #India #KnowYourFood #CookingOils

Food companies aren't hiding sugar from you. They're just calling it something else. Dextrose. Maltodextrin. Evaporated cane juice. Agave nectar. Fruit juice concentrate. Jaggery. Rice syrup. All sugar. All on your 'healthy' snack label right now.
