Meritz Securities Comment on the Earthquake off the Eastern Coast of Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture, Japan - A strong magnitude 7.4 earthquake occurred. - The epicenter was located 174km offshore, with inland areas registering JMA seismic intensities of 2–5. - Kioxia operates a NAND fab in Kitakami, Iwate Prefecture. - Damage assessment is still underway, but given that Kitakami also recorded a seismic intensity of 4, the facility will likely halt operations and begin estimating scrap and rework volumes. - As of April 2026, global NAND capacity stands at 1,337k wpm, of which Kioxia's Iwate Fab 1 accounts for 55k wpm — roughly 4% of global capacity. - Kioxia's Iwate Fab 2 was scheduled to commence partial mass production from 2Q26, but this earthquake could also weigh on future capacity expansion plans.
