Bitcoin Ordinals: The Full Story - From Rare Sats to On-Chain Digital ArtifactsMost people know Bitcoin as digital gold - scarce, decentralized, and focused on sound money. But in early 2023, a developer named Casey Rodarmor introduced something that expanded what Bitcoin could hold the Ordinals protocol. At its core, Ordinals gives every single satoshi (the smallest unit of Bitcoin, 1/100,000,000 BTC) a unique serial number based on the order it was mined. Think of it like stamping a serial number on each grain of sand in a beach. This "ordinal theory" lets us track individual sats as they move across the blockchain. Why does this matter? Because it opened the door to "inscriptions" - attaching arbitrary data (text, images, audio, video, even code) directly onto a specific satoshi using the witness data in Bitcoin transactions. These inscriptions are permanent, immutable, and live natively on Bitcoin's base layer. No sidechains, no wrapped tokens. Just pure Bitcoin. This created Bitcoin-native digital artifacts - basically NFTs that feel more "Bitcoin" than anything on other chains. Rarity plays a big role too: sats get classified by their mining history (common, uncommon, rare, epic, legendary, mythic). The first sat of a block, the first after a halving, or the very first sat ever mined – those carry extra prestige for collectors

ordinals should be buyable anywhere, it’s bitcoin for god's sake. and that vision should stretch across every chain. no matter the chain or asset, one button, any place. frictionless ownership is the real endgame. end of story.

Ordinals may be a mess But at least they’ll always exist onchain And yes I know 90% of people don’t care

BREAKING: Ethereum NFT platform @foundation just announced that it is shutting down and that all of the art will be rugged in one year This is why it's important to store art fully on-chain with protocols like Ordinals

Ordinals as a protocol are incredibly Don’t think anything can beat it as a place for art The “mess” at the moment is more the lack of clarity as to where to trade Those of us here everyday know, but outside of our bubble most people thought Magic Eden was the only option This is a positive for the future though We’ll get our shit together soon
