Not only should there be more agricultural exemptions & provisions to protect farms from financial insolvency, but we should be incentivizing diversification. I want to see farmers encouraged to earn additional income, not less!

@AtomicErectus @Inv3ntive15 @Farm_Archive Home business funding the land is the part most skip. USDA data shows 82% of small farm income comes off-farm. Runway beats acreage every time.

Homesteading is really cool and fun, but you can do an awful lot in a permissive town backyard. If you work with some neighbors and some local farmers, you could probably arrive at something very close to a pre-industrial revolution village. You can't buy that solution though. You can't really show that in an aspirational AI produced image either. (I did the homesteading thing for 7 years, I still own the property and some goats even, and want to get back out there, but I'm town currently, and there's some blessings here too)

Officially started on a new project today. @Farm_Archive will be a free database of farms. The main purpose will be to connect independent farmers and homesteaders with local customers. Still in progress, but you can sign up at farmarchive.org to be notified at launch!

@wilson_dunham_f @Lightbulbprinc1 You sound like someone who might be interested in the free farm archive I’m starting! The whole purpose is to connect independent farmers with customers and likeminded businesses owners. We’re also planning to host free farming resources. Already got a handful of farms to list!

@PivotWithHer @landlawyerbrian Thanks! We’ll be going live later this month or early April and I’m going to start actively reaching out to farmers and homesteaders who would like to be included. The main goal is to raise awareness for independent farms and bring in more local customers.

@Brad_Cow @WadingSmith Yep, I used to work in historic preservation in PA and it was a constant losing battle. That’s why I started this project. I can’t save all the historic homesteads, but I can archive them, and also connect people with local farms that need their support. Win/win!

@WadingSmith Pennsylvania is atrocious with historic preservation. Just wait for the data centers.

In my home state of Pennsylvania, there are small towns that will approve tearing down a historic home to make way for a Dollar General.

When is it ok to sacrifice quality for ease?

@braxton_mccoy I bought our old farmhouse lot in the village we’re in now because it’s only a handful of doors down from a historic chapel with a bell tower. One of my favorite parts of living here! Beautiful old building, too, built by the same stone masons who did the barn foundations.

Every small town in America needs to invest in church bells and loud speakers that blare classical music whenever the bells aren't ringing.

@modernTman Y’all have inspired me. I’m working on this farm archive project to help people find and connect with local farms. Even going to start recording old historic farms that have been lost to time, as well. But now is the time to start supporting our farming communities!
