And yet—during a short legislative session—the Oregon Legislature continues to raise taxes on businesses. Let’s be brutally clear about what that means. When government raises the cost of doing business, companies don’t absorb it out of thin air—they cut expenses. And the largest expense line for most businesses is payroll. Fewer jobs means fewer paychecks. And what is the primary tax this state relies on to fund services? Personal income tax. What do unemployed people stop paying? Income tax. This isn’t complicated. It’s not nuanced. It’s Economics 101. Our leaders are not just ignoring the evidence—they are actively digging the hole deeper, then acting surprised when we sink further. I believe in science. I believe in data. I believe in evidence-based decision-making. And I expect leaders who represent me to do the same.
