@WarriorPrstBlog The Jews thought (and still think) their straightforward reading of prophecy was what rules out Jesus as the Messiah. They thought he was supposed to send out armies to conquer the world (Zech 9). They failed to see these things were fulfilled in the church. Same for Isaiah.

@WarriorPrstBlog In 2Thes2:5-8, Paul describes the same sequence of events we see in Rev20:1-8. He helpfully tells us the restraining of Satan is happening "now", from his perspective. That means the 1000 years is the age of the Church in which the gospel is proclaimed and men are regenerated.

@NintendoSteve You would never conclude they were not meant to be chronological without presuppositional commitment. Read it plainly like John knew how to write according to basic rules of communication. And there’s a reason for “first” and “second” Thessalonians. Chronology is part of context

Protestantism is a missions field for Catholics, because they have an incomplete gospel of salvation and are deprived of important graces. Protestants think the same of Catholics. The difference is we are evangelizing all Protestants, including their best and brightest, whereas Protestants target the poorly catechized, non-practicing, and those who want to use contraception or get a divorce and remarriage. Those who want to practice mortal sin and have Christ, which is not possible, are attracted to an incomplete gospel which assuages their guilt and alleviates their existential terror.

Protestants need to stop using the "Thomist" label. We need less "Thomas for Protestants," and more writing on our own figures, like Balthasar Meisner or Cornelius Martini. The "we can use Thomas too!" framing is inevitably going to make it seem as if we are just second rate RCs who can do nothing more than borrow from their theologians/philosophers. I say this as one who loves St. Thomas. But he cannot be treated as the beginning and end of all theological and philosophical discourse, especially from a Protestant perspective.

@ProtPhilosopher My answer would be: Maybe! Depends on whether the preaching is sound, whether the community is orthodox, and whether he is really submitting to the spirit. But thats precisely why Jesus gave us a visible community, and authorized teachers; so that those conditions can happen.

Ask your Catholic friends and interlocutors this. Can a person who reads Romans, is aided by the Spirit, sits under faithful preaching, and participates in a believing community come to a saving knowledge of justification by faith? If the answer is yes, then what's the epistemic role of the Magisterium in salvation? And if the answer is no, how do you avoid making the Magisterium a fourth member of the Trinity?

@ProvisionistP God's word tells us to submit to our religious leaders. Thus, submitting to God would entail submitting to religious leaders. While stated with a perhaps unhelpful level of starkness, Cameron's claim is that the Pope is a legitimate religious authority to all Christians.

@the_thin_place I once watch a couple Baptists and Lutherans argue about infant baptism. The argument morphed into them fighting about who was REALLY following Sola Scriptura and who was bastardizing it. My conclusion was to not worry if someone accuses me of not understanding it.

I've been dealing with a lot of very very very ignorant interlocutors when it comes to Sola Scriptura. And you know what? I think that just as much blame needs to be laid on contemporary Evangelicals as it does on misrepresentation from their own side.

@KKalvaitis Absolutely correct. The reveal of the reapers as the true antagonist was awesome, but came at a cost. Mass Effect is a cover shooter in which you fight man sized targets. The rest of the series was about finding excuses to have man sized targets.
