This elicited a lot of conversation on IG/FB. Let's see what Track Twitter thinks! How do we improve this?

Early in my coaching career I had a talented player who was chronically five minutes late to everything. Not egregiously late. Just five minutes, every single time. I let it slide because he was good and I didn’t want the conflict. Within a month, half the team was showing up five minutes late. Nobody said a word. The standard just drifted. That’s when it hit me. You’re either actively maintaining your standards or you’re passively lowering them. There’s no neutral position. I’ve also learned that expectations and standards aren’t the same thing, and that distinction matters more than most people realize. Expectations are the vision. The why. In my programs they’ve always been simple. Have fun. Create great experiences and relationships. Learn and grow. That’s the emotional foundation everything else gets built on. Standards are the daily behaviors that actually get you there. Be on time. Be trustworthy. Have a growth mindset and work hard. Take responsibility for your actions. Encourage the people around you. Don’t make excuses. When those are clear and consistent something interesting happens. The standard becomes the authority, not the coach. I don’t have to lecture anyone. I just point to what we all agreed on. The conversation stays about the behavior, not the person. That’s where real accountability lives without anyone feeling attacked. What I’ve seen over 25 years is that the teams, families, and programs that define these things clearly and hold them consistently almost always outperform the ones with similar talent that don’t. It’s not magic. It’s just clarity. People do better when they know exactly where the lines are. Kids especially. They don’t struggle in high standard environments. They struggle in ambiguous ones. Whatever you walk past becomes your new standard. The good news is it works in both directions. Raise the bar and hold it, and the people around you will rise to meet it. Every time.

Student Athlete, “I’m always sore and tired. I can’t figure out why.” Me, “Your nutrition consists of Chick-fil-A , protein bars, Celsius, zero fruits and veggies, no breakfast and you’re up till midnight most nights per your intake forms.” Athlete, “It’s hard to eat meals, I’m up late because I have school work.” Me, “Show me your screen time from this week? You’re averaging 5 hours on TikTok alone. Why can’t you replace screen time with school work so you can get the sleep you need to gain the energy you don’t have to get stronger like you said you wanted? Additionally, why aren’t you eating the 3-5 meals we discussed with the fruits, veggies and proteins you agreed to consume when you set your goals this year? You would be less sore if you had more nutrients in your body especially around training!” Athlete 🦗🦗 This applies to adults too. You HAVE time for what you prioritize. There’s 168 hours in a week. You have time for meal prep and homework if you log off social media. You have time to sleep 7-9 hours if you put down your phone and set your schedule. Your focus and habits in youth dictate your direction in life and position as an adult. You won’t be a student athlete forever. Make healthy choices NOW! You know I’m right 💪

@stevemagness The other important factor for a university is impact of finances to the institution as a whole, not just within the athletic budget. Most xctf athletes are paying $ to the school. Large rosters in relation to scholarship $ is often a NET+ to the true bottom line

If we want track to survive in the NCAA, we need to go back to a more local model. The flying across the country for qualifying model is going to lead to our demise. We've got at least be closer to other sports, even given our team size differences.

Reminded today by @AdamKedge Fit means fit. Fast means fast. Fit does not necessarily mean fast. Fast does not necessarily mean fit. If kids are going to run big times this spring it’s my opinion that you need to be both fit AND fast. Hopefully the fit is still building and you’re not starting on day 1 of the official season. Fast will come from fit and racing your event is the most specific training an athlete can do. Race above and race under but racing reveals competitiveness promotes fast.
