@TimMcGovern18 @WmWeedon @DarthHarryson Once I was at a district convention where someone proposed term-limiting the district president so that more pastors could have a chance to be DP. Some strongly worded responses shut that down. Exciting!

If you’re relatively new to our Synod, don’t let all the craziness of late get you down. We do this thing every three years. Then we go back to boringly normal. It’s like clockwork.

@Ray437677951852 @MetzUAC1530 You say this, but I'd like to see your evidence for it. ELCA is collapsing despite their openness in fellowship. New people at my WELS church are glad to hear that we will never compromise doctrine for outward fellowship.

@MetzUAC1530 I’d be happy is all conservative confessional Lutherans would start having altar fellowship with each other. It hurts our overall witness to the world to appear this sectarian over small things.

Maybe it’s just me, but if Lutherans are going to be praying with others, I’d at least prefer that they make every attempt to be the ones leading the prayer. Of course, prayer led by any non-Christian is totally out of bounds in either way.

@timrwild It's the best. We never argue over doctrine at conventions. We have no politicking for synod offices. We have no "synods within the synod". Any of our churches will call any of our pastors.

We get criticized almost nonstop for our doctrine on fellowship, but truth be told, I’m quite fond of it.

@prosandhans @account_plain I agree, though one of my biggest frustrations as a pastor is the members who aren't interested in being educated. How many church members come to Bible Class? I love teaching fellowship, because it's one of our greatest blessings. I'd love to teach it more.

@SethGeorgson @account_plain Idk. I think the “because I said so” approach is far more damaging than what it may seem like on the surface. I have a number of issues with the WELS, in a way that a brother might get annoyed with his siblings. A big issue I have is a lack of lay education on these nuances.

@prosandhans @account_plain Nuance requires maturity and wisdom. It takes a great deal of patient instruction for people to understand fellowship well. It's not ideal, but sometimes like a parent we say, "Just don't, because I said so!"

@HansFiene @BereanHouse Nope, that's still no good. Neighbor smokes and it stinks so bad I can't open windows and don't want me or my kids on the lawn. Ugh.

Yeah, you’re right, Jesus was completely a weak willed empath. 🤦‍♂️ I can see both sides of the argument, but the Christian’s who say lock them up for life but don’t kill them have a reasonable spiritual basis. I also understand that heinous acts like this are unlikely to turn into a redemption story. Regardless of what they do, they’re still God’s children and He hopes for their redemption.

I am challenging any death penalty opponent — there are millions of them, allegedly — to step up to the plate right now and explain why this guy should not be executed. His guilt is established beyond any doubt whatsoever. His crime is utterly savage and heinous. Tell us why he doesn’t deserve to die. Go ahead.

@TartanLutheran @WmWeedon Don't take my comments as mean-spirited. I am simply baffled by the LCMS position on suffrage, which is not historical in the least, nor, do I think, justifiable by Scripture. I see no light between "administrative mechanism" and headship.

If I were a new pastor…I’d ask elders to switch to 1 year lectionary; pretty much stick to DS 3; nudge toward weekly eucharist being norm; patiently begin teaching the AC in Adult Bible Class or my elders; ask for a policy that all music in funerals and weddings be from LSB,

@TartanLutheran @WmWeedon So, it appears that you are saying that yes, they do exercise authority over men according to the way the church is structured, but because they are nice and smart you are ok with it. I'm glad you have peace. Your women must be much better than the women Paul dealt with.

A pastor’s Call can not be terminated in the LCMS except in cases of moral or legal failures or abandonment of duties. Designation of such is presided over by the District President. A Divine Call is a Divine Call. As for Budgets, I’ve never seen a case where the Voters have acted dictatorially. Budgets are built with input from Pastor, Elders, and Council. It is presented, discussed, and passed. The mechanism exists to hear all voices but the transparency and trust in our parish has given us a peaceful life together. My sisters in Christ are intelligent, capable, and godly wives, mothers, widows, and single women who are reverent and faithful to God’s Word. I do not see our Voters’ Assembly as some Supreme Council. They are a family meal where everyone shares in our mutual life together. The Pastor is honored and obeyed as he speaks God’s Word. The Elders are respected as advisors and support to the Pastor. The Council and especially the President is a humble servant leader. It works. There is peace. The Word is taught in its purity and the Sacraments are rightly administered.

@TartanLutheran @WmWeedon Can you explain to me how women electing officers and determining your budget is not giving women authority over men? Could the women of your church terminate their pastor's call?

When I arrived at St. Matthew, I was told by the Elders and Council that all decisions pertaining to lectionary, liturgy, music, and contents and implementation of process and procedures for catechesis was the purvey of the Office of Ministry. The color of the curtains in the fellowship hall and facility use, care, and maintenance was the purvey of the Council. Budget and election of officers was decided by the Voters. I’ve been here over 18 months and that is exactly how we do life.

@TartanLutheran @ArtGuy313578051 @RRT5ON1996 WELS holds the pastoral office in high honor. We also have great respect for our synodical leaders, who have true calls to serve the church on the synodical level. LCMS also teaches that synod presidents and district presidents are called to exercise authority.

WELS gets poked at for fun and it IS funny. But never forget the President of the LCMS said ELS and WELS “did what had to be done” in breaking fellowship w/ LCMS to avoid the theological errors that befell them at the time. We’re ALL happy LCMS recovered to it roots though!

I never thought I would say this but I despise creationists. I think they give a very bad impression of what religion can do to intelligence and critical thinking.

@TartanLutheran @ArtGuy313578051 @RRT5ON1996 But the issues we're debating over the Holy Ministry are not so much about the substance of it. It's how best to talk about it and how to handle certain adiaphora. It has never been a debate along synod lines.

@TartanLutheran @ArtGuy313578051 @RRT5ON1996 The interesting thing is that the WELS position on ministry is less controversial to us because within our synod it is not often abused. Within LCMS the ministry is frequently abused, and so to them the matter is far more controversial.
