Your question suggests five senators could oust him in the middle of his term as leader. That’s not true. In the House of Representatives, a tiny number of lawmakers can oust the speaker—at any time. That feature is unique to the House. In the Senate GOP we don’t even have a rule or procedure for replacing a leader in the middle of a two-year term. It is true that under our rules, any five senators can call for a meeting of the entire conference at any time. But in practice, that kind of meeting tends not to materialize unless a solid majority of the conference wants it to happen. Even if such a meeting were called and even if it actually materialized, it still wouldn’t end as you seem to assume. To pursue the outcome you’re suggesting, one would have to use that meeting to propose a new procedure for a mid-term leadership swap, and that—at a minimum—would require a majority of the conference to support it. For a whole host of reasons—including the fact that Senator Thune is beloved by colleagues and very popular within the conference—the odds of that happening are literally 0 in 100,000.

I’m tired of the Senate’s evergreen excuse for inaction: “We don’t have 60 votes.” There are ways around the 60-vote cloture standard. It’s time to start using them. And stop disingenuously characterizing any refusal to do so as virtuous or conservative. Share if you agree.

Last night I joined @FoxBusiness to discuss the current state of the NYC budget, Mamdani's property tax threats, as well as the recent decision by NYU Langone to discontinue transgender 'care' for minors. Let's get one thing straight, this budget deficit was entirely predictable, and throughout the campaign Zohran pretended it wasn't an issue. He counted on massive tax increases that only the state could give him, and knew he'd have to hold the middle class hostage to get what he wanted. A property tax increase is a nonstarter. I don't think a majority of the City Council has any stomach for it. And increased taxes from Albany would not only be wasted by an administration that has no idea what they're doing, but also wouldn't be limited to 'the rich' for very long either. Zohran is also pretending we can't meet our current fiscal obligations without these massive tax increases, when in fact he's adding BILLIONS to the budget over last year, and that's making the situation significantly worse. The only solution here is major spending cuts -- with a particular eye towards fraud -- as we shovel $20 BILLION per year into the nonprofit black hole with nothing to show for it. How about we start there? Of course, nothing of the sort is on the table. In fact, Zohran wants to pump MORE billions of your taxes into corrupt politically-connected nonprofits. Because that's how the Democrats maintain power -- laundering tax money into left-wing activism. We're headed for a death spiral, unless cooler heads can prevail here. We're already the highest-taxed city in the entire country. Yet we STILL can't make it work? Something is very wrong, and it all comes down to the abject failure of single-party Democrat leadership.
