Tornado Watch, canceled. One last chance for damaging winds with a cold front that moves E across the area 6-10pm. Possible a Severe Thunderstorm Watch gets issued for that. Regardless, it will be gusty with & after the front with temps dropping 20-30 degrees overnight.

I share this graphic so you can possibly better understand how severe weather TV cut-ins work for parts of the state. This map shows the designated TV market area by county for the state of Illinois. I’ve labeled our fellow Nexstar stations who cover a large part of Illinois. We largely only go on for tornado warnings for the counties in green. This is the Champaign-Decatur-Springfield market. Even though McLean literally touches Champaign county, and is close enough in some areas that people could watch our signal via antenna, that is considered in the Peoria TV markets. I also show this so you can see how large of an area we cover. For example later tonight we may have to cut-in for a tornado warning for Iroquois county but 125 miles south in Effingham county, nothing is going on. I wish we could segment out our coverage to just specific areas but the technology isn’t there yet for TV signals. The people in Iroquois county rely on us to give them the updates just as Effingham county would if the setup was flipped. Again I just wanted to maybe explain a little of the “inside baseball” on how it all works. Hope that makes sense. Also if you don’t know what county you live in or where it is on the map, definitely study this graphic so you can see where you are.

This was one of the closest things to a true “Snowicane” that you’re ever going to see. Minimum core pressure of 965 mbar was comparable to a Category 3 Major Hurricane. Sustained winds of 75 MPH were officially Hurricane-force, with peak gusts reaching 98 MPH.

NHC has completed its post-analysis and Tropical Cyclone Report for Hurricane #Melissa. Melissa, one of the strongest hurricanes on record in the Atlantic basin, reached category 5 intensity (on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale) with a minimum central pressure of 892 mb and brought catastrophic wind and storm surge impacts to portions of western Jamaica. Melissa’s slow motion also produced heavy rainfall and catastrophic flood impacts across portions of the Greater Antilles. As of the release of the report, Melissa is responsible for 95 fatalities.
