Author and DJ Zakia Sewell is using British folk culture to challenge far-right nationalism. Sewell has journeyed around the British Isles exploring Britain’s folk resurgence for her debut book, Finding Albion: Myth, Folklore and the Quest for a Hidden Britain. Finding Albion builds on Sewell’s hit audio series for BBC Radio 4, which saw her seek out a different, more inclusive idea of “Britishness” beyond the usual national myths and symbols. This is simply not true. Women that attempt to carry out an unauthorised abortion without medical oversight will no longer be prosecuted as criminals, but treated with compassion. Abortion in the UK is still a highly regulated procedure requiring the involvement of two doctors
Dr Rahmeh Aladwan@doctor_rahmeh

The UK House of Lords has just legalised abortion up to birth. Women can now end the life of their unborn baby at any stage, for any reason, without legal consequences. A truly dark day for Britain.

@Mr_HaSu @Msk28599276 @BuzzPatterson @emma6USA I would have underestimated the soviets ability to fund their part of the war, but when you see how they’ve ramped up weapon manufacturing for Ukraine, it’s impressive with the whole state working on it Always easier to fund a total war in a communist country

@croucher_tiger @Msk28599276 @BuzzPatterson @emma6USA So I also think he is overstating the US contribution, but without the US dollars/equipment, soviet logistics would have been damn near impossible. The UK would have been a much worse position, and convoys would have also been damn near impossible. I was born in the UK btw.

Lebanon is a perfect model of what happens when two civilizations share geography without sharing a political philosophy. It’s a small country, same language, same food, same weather, same ancient history. No walls. No checkpoints. But each community, Christian and Muslim, lives behind invisible civilizational lines. They don’t mix in political life, educational life, or social life. These lines have existed since the Ottomans, and they hardened after the civil war. The Christian areas built their society around a European-influenced political culture: secular schools, mixed-gender social norms, individual rights, and a relatively open civic space. The Muslim areas built "Islamic society". The result is not “diversity," but dual sovereignty inside one state. In 2023, the country literally split into two time zones during daylight-saving time, one Muslim and one Christian. Neighbors who live in the same building had different times. It was an honest reflection of two separate civilizational logics refusing to follow the same clock. Lebanon is a failed state because it tried to fit two incompatible political visions under one flag. The West is repeating Lebanon’s experiment but pretending it will end differently. There is no historical precedent for that working.

This is a very odd post from a Conservative who says he believes in freedom of expression under law and is a principal spokesman of the Free Speech Union. I appreciate that he does not like Islam and there is no reason why he should. As a Christian it is not my faith. But the use of Trafalgar Square ( with permission) for religious events Christian and other goes back a long way. There have been prayers and hymns, chants and religious events performed there in the past. If such an event 'shouldn't happen again' it raises the question of whether this is to apply to all religious events or just to Muslim ones. If to all, then we are moving like France to imposing secularism as a norm and it is contrary to our national tradition and does not seem to have helped develop social cohesion there. If just to Muslims then it is an act of discrimination against them without any lawful basis. To achieve it you would have to enact discriminatory legislation targeted at Muslims. Is this what Nick Timothy is advocating ?

Too many are too polite to say this. But mass ritual prayer in public places is an act of domination. The adhan - which declares there is no god but allah and Muhammad is his messenger - is, when called in a public place, a declaration of domination. Perform these rituals in mosques if you wish. But they are not welcome in our public places and shared institutions. And given their explicit repudiation of Christianity they certainly do not belong in our churches and cathedrals. I am not suggesting everybody at Trafalgar Square last night is an Islamist. But the domination of public places is straight from the Islamist playbook. Trafalgar Square belongs to all of us. It is a national memorial to our independence and our salvation. Last night was not like a televised football match or a St Patrick’s Day celebration. It was an act of domination and therefore division. It shouldn’t happen again.

The reporting on abortion to term is annoying me. My instinct has always been pro-life. But the debate in the UK was settled around 24 weeks. Some wanted less, some wanted more. It was only after WHO guidance changed that the debate was reopened here. The amendment to the Police and Crime Bill does NOT legalise abortion up to birth. The legislation still centres on 24 weeks. And it has always been the case that abortions after 24 weeks even up to birth, with sign off from 2 doctors, where there are abnormalities or the mother’s life is in danger. Many people question whether a cleft palate should fall into that category, but it is true that the current law allows doctors to interpret it that way. (Unbelievably) The change to the law now means that if a woman procures an abortion herself after 24 weeks, even up to full term, she cannot be prosecuted. Every part of me rejects that. But it is important to be accurate, that is not the same thing as saying abortion is now fully legal up to birth. It’s a change in how the law treats the woman, not a wholesale rewriting of the legal limits of 24 weeks. I think that’s an important distinction. Do I think it will be abused? Yes. Is it abhorrent, Yes.
