March 2026 ISM Services PMI Report and the Signs of a Late Cycle Economy March Services PMI came in at 54%, which says expansion, but the report reads more like defensive expansion than healthy expansion. The composite is built from four equal parts which are Business Activity, New Orders, Employment, and Supplier Deliveries. That matters because the headline was supported by strong orders at 60.6 and slower deliveries at 56.2 even as Business Activity fell to 53.9 and Employment dropped into contraction at 45.2. The page 2 breakdown makes the distortion obvious. Orders improved, but the part that tells you whether firms trust demand enough to act on it did not. Why That Matters This is how weak conditions can still print as decent PMI data. Companies can pull orders forward, import more, and build inventories because they are trying to hedge tariff risk, shipping disruptions, and higher energy costs. That still shows up as activity even if final demand is not truly strong. Respondents said they were purchasing extra inventory for geopolitical reasons, hedging uncertainty around Iran, and dealing with higher landed costs tied to war risk and tariff changes. Imports rose to 55.2, inventories stayed in expansion, and inventory sentiment said stocks were too high for the 35th straight month. That is not clean growth. That is precautionary behavior. The Most Misleading Positive Supplier Deliveries looks positive in the headline, but it is the most dangerous part of the report to read naively. This index is inverted. Above 50 means deliveries are getting slower. In a healthy cycle that can reflect strong demand. In this report it is tied to shipping issues, flight disruptions, supplier back orders, truck shortages, and Middle East conflict spillovers. So one of the components holding up the PMI is not prosperity. It is friction. The Real Warning Signs What jumps out is how fast the internals deteriorate as you move from orders to output to labor • 14 industries reported higher new orders • only 11 reported higher business activity • only 5 reported higher employment • only 3 reported higher export orders That is not broadening demand. That is thinning demand. The percentages tell the same story. 32.0% reported higher new orders, but only 22.8% reported higher business activity and just 10.7% reported higher employment. Firms are willing to book work and secure inputs, but not willing to hire into it. That is classic late cycle behavior. Inflation Without Confidence Prices surged to 70.7, the biggest one month jump in more than 13 years. Seventeen industries reported higher prices and not one reported lower prices. On page 3, manufacturing prices also exploded higher to 78.3 while supplier deliveries slowed there too. When both services and manufacturing are seeing slower deliveries and hotter prices at the same time, this does not look like healthy reacceleration. It looks like rising stagflation risk. What A Truly Strong Services Economy Would Show If services were genuinely expanding in a durable way, you would expect employment to be above 50 and improving, business activity to confirm new orders, export orders to strengthen, and inventories to feel lean rather than too high. That is not what this report shows. Instead it shows demand that is still alive, but distorted by stockpiling, supply anxiety, tariff uncertainty, and cost pressure. My Take This was a low quality expansion report. The headline says growth, but the internals say companies are playing defense. Orders were strong, but hiring collapsed. Deliveries slowed, but for bad reasons. Imports and inventories rose, but partly because firms are trying to get ahead of disruption. Prices surged, but output did not confirm. This is the kind of report that looks fine on the surface and gets much more troubling the deeper you read it.

For those of us inside MASSIVE legacy energy industry institutions, not only is our hardware locked down but the AI we do have access to is limited to certain internal data-lakes. Once these institutions properly onboard AI, which will be commercial grade, productivity will finally hit our daily workflows. It’s slow going but probably a 2027 story for us knowledge workers.

I’ve been having a blast building all kinds of dashboards/tools that are useful for my life but they’re all contextual to me as an individual and I have no motivation to try and make any of it publicly available That feeling of individual contextual work flows is new and so it’s much more interesting and excited to iterate with that than to try and create some commercialized product that is more generic
