@project4_4 This is an iconic picture showing the use of the Churchill Ark to form a rudimentary bridge across shallow rivers. They were designed to bridge ditches and shell holes and to form a ramp over a sea wall or other obstacle. In the field they were pressed into other useful roles.

Any 47 Commando specialists here? Or people with records from their period in Normandy? I'm currently looking into their actions at Port-en-Bessin, and could use some original records. 47commando.org.uk is great, but I'd like to go back to the original records.

Operation Avalanche was the codename for the Allied landings near Salerno, Italy, on 9 September 1943. Following the defeat of Axis forces in North Africa and the successful invasion of Sicily, Allied planners turned their attention to mainland Italy. Churchill in particular saw Italy as the โ€œunderbelly of Europe,โ€ believing its capture would knock Italy out of the war, secure the Mediterranean, and force Germany to divert troops away from northern France ahead of the planned invasion of Normandy. The Italian government capitulated on 8 September, but German forces quickly moved to take over the defence of the peninsula, ensuring that the invasion would be anything but easy. The main objective of Avalanche was to seize Naples and advance eastward to cut off retreating Axis forces in southern Italy.

@AdamDavidWarne2 My pickup at Warbases, also for What A Cowboy. I'm hoping these pre coloured buildings will work as my own painting skills are decidedly lacking.

Remember when โ€˜guestsโ€™ on TV shows were just interesting/notorious/accomplished or otherwise compelling people? Who talked about themselves or the world in general? Now it is just people selling things. Even the cooking shows!

On this very day in 1940 a 25-pdr (happy to be corrected, I can never tell the difference) of 361 Battery, 91st Field Regiment, Royal Artillery, at Oppy near Vimy, 7 January 1940. The Regimental war diary has them at Lomme.

Unlike other infantry weapons, the Vickers Machine Gun could use indirect fire barrages to target enemies outside of visual range. These operations required specialist training, large quantities of MGs, ammo & water (for barrel-cooling) to be fully effective.

A question for you: what's something that you assumed was true of just about everyone (because it's true of you) that you later realized was actually an unusual or rare attribute?
