“Central Govt funded” — that’s what the Tree Officer claimed. But facts Not fully central. It’s a 50:50 GoI–GoM project. And 70–80% funding is debt (incl. EIB & AFD loans). This debt is repaid by the project → citizens of Pune pay. That’s why public transport gets costlier.

Pune Metro feasibility some thoughts. 1. what the thermal mass of concrete is and how much concrete is going to get used up in the metro project. For the uninitiated; •Thermal mass is the ability of a material to absorb, store and release heat. Thermal lag is the rate at which a material releases stored heat. For most common building materials, the higher the thermal mass, the longer the thermal lag. Concrete has a high thermal mass, acting as a heat sink that absorbs, stores, and slowly releases heat. With a density of approx 2240/kg/metre cube & specific heat capacity of 0.92 kj/kgK . It means concrete is capable of absorbing approximately 92% of the Sun’s energy and heat falling on it. In hot countries, Temperatures on a bare concrete surface can be almost double that of the atmosphere, so if the outside temperature increases to about 42 degrees then the temperature on a concrete slab could be above 65 to even 82 degrees Celsius. How much concrete has gone into the metro. How much will go in totally. About a lakh tons of concrete or 1.2 to 1.5 lakh tons of concrete gets consumed on every kilometre of metro rail built. & concrete for the entire project ? Some estimates put it at over 40 million cubic metres or over 10 crore metric tons of concrete. 2. What is its urban heat island impact going to be. This much concrete could raise temperatures by upto 2/3 degrees Celsius in the metro corridor. It could be higher in places and lower in others where there’s more tree cover for instance. 3. How much will the temperature rise be on average. What are the high low thresholds. Some estimates suggest a temperature increase of over 2-8 degrees Celsius in the metro corridor. 4. What will they do to offset it. They’ll fell almost a few thousand mature old growth “cooling” trees and do nothing about the replacement or compensatory plantation., Result: the city will become a heat island. How many trees are required to offset the Metro and its heat island impact. At least a crore trees, they won’t even plant trees in thousands for compensation. Never mind lakhs or crores. 5. Almost 80% of the funding for the metro is coming from debt. This debt will be loaded on the project & If the project fails, the people of pune will be liable to pay for these open liabilities. What’s the fail safe they’re proposing. Nothing. Only increased taxes will pay for the debt if the project fails. Right now, it’s a sure shot failure cos the projected ridership of 6 lakh commuters per day couldn’t be met. The ridership was in thousands until they doubled the PMPML fares and forced people off the bus system to take the Metro instead. Yet in Pune, only 2 lakh people ride the metro everyday as per their data, that’s a third of the projected ridership population. The burden of paying for the 2/3rds deficit rests upon us ordinary citizens. There is more : The debt that has been taken is a Euro Dollar dominated one. This means the tax payer suffers the double whammy of paying for the depreciating rupee value too. It’s not over yet. They want to progressively build 280 kms of metro. This will mean an easy outlay of over 150,000 crores. How much “metro” can Pune afford before it breaks down and goes bust. I could go on, but these oversmart engineers, politicians & architects are all mostly blind for a reason - they’re all creatures of the system; who don’t know which end is which. The taxpayer will get stuck with another bill he didn’t ask for and they didn’t provide for. This being the case should Pune opt for a dead in the water metro project or first plant trees, build high quality world class “existing” roads and invest in 10,000 buses. Given the current situation with the weather, it seems like a choice between the devil and the deep blue sea.

“Jhoot pe jhoot… even the highest offices hear the same story. But Pune sees the truth every day. At hearings — no preparation, nothing in black & white, no transparency. Hearings held just for namesake. After past performance, why should anyone believe them now?” #mahametro

Metro or Mismanagement? Pune Metro was sold as a fix for traffic & pollution. Reality? ❌ Trees gone 🌳 ❌ Poor planning ❌ Low ridership ❌ Daily disruption This isn’t smart development — it’s careless execution. Progress ≠ destroying nature & ignoring people. Time to ?

Pune Municipal Corporation's ambitious 44-kilometre riverfront development project has come under serious scrutiny after the state government ordered a joint inquiry by the PMC, Water Resources Department, and Maharashtra Pollution Control Board into alleged violations of environmental clearance conditions. Environmental activist Sarang Yadwadkar has accused the civic body of narrowing the river channel at several stretches, potentially reducing its flood-carrying capacity and increasing the risk of urban flooding — a direct violation of the Water Resources Department's 2018 circular that prohibits altering the river's cross-section. Yadwadkar also alleges that the flood data used by project consultants is several times lower than scientific assessments by the Maharashtra Engineering Research Institute, warning that the combination of a narrowed river channel and underestimated flood levels could push Pune toward a preventable urban disaster. The state has directed that the complainant be included in the inspection process, signalling that the allegations have been taken seriously at the highest level. #PuneRiverfront #PuneMunicipalCorporation #EnvironmentalViolation #PuneNews #SavePuneRivers

She stood. She questioned. In a system where silence is convenient, her courage is disruptive. One voice can shake Authority. Imagine the impact if we all speak up. Change doesn’t begin with fear. It begins with awareness—and the courage to act. #Speakup #accountability
